It's usually $100 cheaper.

All games at this point are digital - the game installs to and runs off the SSD. Comes down to if you want the license check to be on MS' servers, or the presence of a physical disc.

Disc advantages - you can take them anywhere. You can buy and sell them. Prices usually fall on physical much faster than digital. But the biggest advantage, by far IMO, is being able to buy and play "out of print games". Some games you just can't buy digitally anymore because licenses have expired (see Forza horizon 1/2/3). You can buy old games on eBay forever.

Digital - nothing physical to keep track of, no games to swap. Sometimes will come with the "right" to stream the game from the cloud. Sometimes backward compatibility on newer consoles. YMMV on the last two though.
Good price but that "8k" strikes a nerve
For an extra $200 might as well future proof and get better performance and go X.

Exactly - specially since a lot of games run at 1440p

Makes me wonder if I should be targeting the Series S on a 4K tv then.. I'll never use the disc drive, but I do want to play games in 4K 60hz HDR

If you'll never use the disc drive then you'd be better off waiting for the discless series X coming next year with a 2TB hard drive. If you need something in the meantime, pick up a series S for $200 this black Friday. Although you mention 4K 60fps is your desired output, and none of the consoles really do that in any semi-demanding game. Even then, it's typically dynamic resolution with upscaling.

Good to know. Yeah I feel like even though I already have a capable TV (doesn't have VRR or 120hz) I'd be fine with upscaled 1440p 60hz for single player games.. I'll consider the PS digital as well, just like the idea of quick resume and game pass more

I picked up this deal last time and PayPal had a 4% offer. After about 2-3 weeks of waiting for my PayPal points, they zeroed it out the reward points so I got nothing. šŸ‘Ž
The console is awesome though. šŸ˜‰

Id definitely look past the Series S. As another poster mentioned, your best bet with Xbox would be the new Series X with upgraded capacity, controller, and WiFi6. With that said, you can't really go wrong with Series X or PS5. I wouldn't have said that a year or so ago but Microsoft has been making moves.

I'm still happy with my Xbox One S, frankly (I'm a very very occasional gamer and sometimes use it to play my Blu-ray movies). So upgrading to this feels like really a waste. But... I need to use or lose that stupid $200 on Dell for my Amex Biz Plat.
Any idea whether this thing is decent for resale? Not even for scalping, just getting close to what I paid...?

Well if you buy it you can also sell or trade in your One S to GameStop and use that credit towards gamepass or just cash it out. That might give you an extra $100 or so on top of the Amex / Dell discount

I've been happy with my Series S that I got for $180 a year ago. I'm holding out for a $300 discless Series X. Or I'll go with a discless PS5 for $300 if that comes up 1st. And yes, I'll wait years.

Looks like I could get even up to $200 via places like Ebay.

So $449 + tax - value of verbooten MR - $200 Amex credit - $200 sale of older Xbox + controllers and such = effective net cost of $45 Plus my time and effort in selling the old thing, setting up the new thing. Hmm.

The remaining questions, then, are whether the $75 Dell GC offer or other benefits are likely to come back for Black Friday with this console.

EDITED TO AMEND:
Nah, looks like I was way off on resale value. Looks like around $100, maybe $150 with extra controllers and such. Bummer. So a net cost of $100-$150. Still not awful.

So $50 off retail for 3 year console. I would've expected steeper discounts by now
