How good or bad is a 3050 with a 45 watt tdp?

Holy crap this seems like an amazing deal for everybody but gamers. If you do media on PC (as opposed to Mac) this is a killer rig at this price. Soup to nuts.
Do you think would be good for cad work?

I was going to give it a shot, however for me there were two issues. The first is the battery life is so bad. OLED machines typically have terrible battery life. This one may be 2 hours unless you dim the screen and maybe get 3. The other issue is that it runs pretty hot. Sometimes I use a laptop in bed and a really hot laptop is not ideal. Also an issue using it on my lap. To me, it would feel like my laptops of the past, before improvements were made on heat and battery. I know there will be great deals on laprops during Black friday. Manufacturers are way overstocked. This machine does have some good specs for 700. Its just not great for portability/battery/heat.

i9 just seems very unnecessary for such a machine.
I'd agree if you are game focused, but this is a media/content focused computer, so the heavier duty processor will likely be utilized by someone buying it for that purpose.

That, and I doubt you can get a discrete GPU and high end processor for anything close to this price for an OLED laptop

I would think so, but I say that not knowing anything about the i9 this laptop is using.

Sometimes mobile chips are nerfed, so I'd research that, but otherwise I'd think it's good.

You might want a laptop cooler pad for it to sit on while it's doing heavy duty workloads too, though.

Big mistake to go for an i9 processor. They run so hot, it literally melted parts of my Dell xps.
Heat and severe throttling is a general problem of intel processors till they can advance to 5nm or lower fabrication technologies.

Very good specs on paper so it's tempting but unless the cooling is incredible I doubt there's much point to the i9 cpu

If you're using the g word, the 3050 is a hard pass.

Per the following Asus page [asus.com] it indicates the following for the Q540VJ series:
8GB DDR5 on board
8GB DDR5 SO-DIMM
Max Total system memory up to:16GB
*Dual-channel memory support requires at least one SO-DIMM module.

The product page over on Best Buy under the Specifications states:
System Memory RAM Expandable To 16 gigabytes

But if one reads the user reviews and question/answers on the Best Buy product page there are a number of users claiming to be able to expand the memory beyond 16GB up to 40GB by using a single 16GB or 32GB SODIMM.

From the Question/Answers section are several purposed replies to questions about memory from Asus:

Q: QuestionI've seen from multiple sources that this laptop's upgradeable RAM slot can only support 16GB DDR5 for a max total RAM of 24GB. However, why can't you install a 32GB DDR5 RAM stick in this slot (instead of 16GB)? What is stopping that from happening?(2 answers)

A: AnswerA 32GB RAM upgrade was not implemented in the hardware, installing it will make the system unstable.

Q: QuestionWhat is the maximum memory this laptop supports? This particular model has 8GB onboard + 8GB SO-DIMM. Can I replace the 8GB SO-DIMM to a 16GB or 32GB SO-DIMM, making it 24GB or 40GB respectively?(5 answers)

A: AnswerThe RAM slot will support 16GB maximum size, making the total maximum RAM size to 24GB.

PCI 3.0 nvme??? Not 4.0??? No wifi 6E? Decent CPU, weak GPU... 60%+ slower than a 3060.. which is now considered slow... .. "creator" , heh. Good looking screen in person. Lotta heat related negative comments. The G14 6900hs w/ 6700s gpu seems better deal for same or $50 more if at your store.

*To preface, I'm a console gamer that just got into PC gaming this year so I could very well be wrong about some things.*

At this price, I wouldn't get this if your doing it to game. The 3050ti is fine if expectations are within reason but with that said, I wouldn't want to pay over $700 after taxes for it. My laptop as a whole is way different (Ryzen5600h/32gb RAM/1tb SSD/15" 144hz 1080p) but uses the 3050ti and I've got $450 in it after upgrades. What I've found is that it will run the games from the last generation pretty well but the new, graphic intensive games of now not so much. I'm playing RDR2 w/ setting mixed between high/ultra and getting 60+ easily. Turn down a little bit and I can get 100+. Starfield though, that's a different story. I can't really do better than 50fps on lower end settings. Something to keep in mind though is that is at 1080p and while plugged in. I can't imagine the 3050ti being able to game at the better resolution (2.8k) on this laptop. I think this is more of a deal for creators than gamers.

Well, this is a good deal, but store pick up only. They don't do shipping and my local stores it is sold out.
Make sure you get the exact model, there are other versions of this laptop with different specs.
