Rheem has been sued / class action. Do some research if you expect to ever need them to honor the warranty.

I've got a 4th gen that isn't too bad and hardly any noise complaints in the reviews. When the 5th gen came out is when I really started to see complaints here and on HD.

I have 2 of the 50 gallons. Love them. They are very cheap to run. My complaint is the noise. Probably not an issue if yours is in an unfinished basement or garage, but mine are not. One is under the basement stairs adjacent to my home theater. I have an automation that shuts it off if the theater is on because it is that loud. On a positive note though, the Rheem software integrated well with home assistant.

I got the 80 gallon model of this a month ago and so far I highly recommend it. My electricity bill will be about $35 a month lower. My only minor complaint is that, being in my basement, I was hoping to not need my dehumidifier. But the water heater just doesn't take out that much moisture. I've had no issues with the Rheem app.

That's really surprising, I can barely hear mine when I'm in the same room as it. Suggests to me something is wrong with yours; maybe the fan is unbalanced or something?

Off topic.. what's a decent price nowadays for a 50 gallon in the smaller apartment size short ones? Mine is making knocking noises and almost 8 years old.

Mine is super-efficient, and I love that... but it is loud. I wonder why some of them are quieter.

I own one for a few years and love it.
Has anyone that owns this channel the sacrificial anion rod?
And if so how difficult or expensive was it?

You can buy them off Amazon for like $25 I believe. You should replace it every ~3 years
get a 22mm socket to do so.

Got 65gl exactly a year ago for $2k with 1K utility rebate, so $1k all in. Works perfectly. Installed it myself, in combination with mixing valve we never run out of water.

Home Depot [homedepot.com] has 50-Gal Rheem ProTerra 10-Year Hybrid High Efficiency Smart Electric Water Heater (Model - XE50T10HS45U0) on sale for $1539. Choose free ship to store or delivery is $55 otherwise.

Additional Savings:
  • Federal Tax Credit: This Heat Pump Water Heater may qualifiy for a 30% Project Cost Federal Tax Credit [energystar.gov] (up to $2,000 maximum amount credited).
  • Local Energy Rebates: Look under the product price for text similar to "Get Up to $_,__ in Rebates for 12345" and click on the link then enter your zip code to check for available local utility rebates and what terms they require.
The key to savings is for the device to run in heat pump mode as much as possible. The others modes use much more electricity. When I bought mine last year, our 65 gallon model was just a little higher than the 50. So when we use it, the bigger supply is available to the family and the replenishment is in heat pump mode. Otherwise, with a smaller tank and multiple users, we might have had to refill the tank in conventional (non heat pump = much more costly) mode to meet everyone's needs. Often we take showers and baths in the evening and the tank runs in heat pump mode during the night while we're asleep. Wake up to full tank of water at very low costs.

By the way, love being able to turn to maximum savings mode via WiFi when gone for more than a day. Keeps the tank around 72 degrees. When heading home from travel, I'll return it to heat pump mode so that a few hours later when I get home, the tank is full of 135 degree water.

I want one of these but I have an old 1960s home that sound rolls through and I feel like I'd hear it run upstairs in my bedroom

We have gas here so I'm probably going to go tankless gas next time 🤷 ♀️
