Why is a this basswood though? I thought that was only for their cheaper guitars.
It can be, but need not be. EVH loved using guitars made of it and just about all the Wolfgangs use it. Also, used on Ibanez's including Prestige models and the old J-Customs

Made in Japan is hella overrated. It still sounds like any other Fender, and it sure as heck doesn't make your "anyways here's Wonder Wall" sound less crappy.

Perhaps so, but you do at least get a rosewood fretboard, which is a bit of an improvement over pao ferro lol.

They are pretty comparable, but the MIJ will hold its value better. Fender Japan made some kind of chane several years ago, because the U-shaped neck profiles went to a D-shape and the color formulation changed. I first noticed it on the 68 pink paisley and blue flower models. I have not played this model, but Trogley reviewed one and described the neck as a D.

That said I have a heavily modified Player Tele as my #2. Swap the bridge plate to a vintage unit with compensated brass saddles and you're in business. Swap the pickups for Tex-Mex or Pure Vintage 64s and you'll be in love.

My son started teaching himself chords in our basement, and it is the best entertainment for us to listen to the classics he's being "instructed" with online…he has an old electric guitar I got from a family friend and I don't even know what it is (too bad I can't post pictures) along with an acoustic- but he has started talking about picking something new up. What would you recommend for a fast moving beginner that would provide some longevity?

Your son probably has a better idea of what he wants than anyone on SD. The most important thing is that he gets an instrument that inspires him to play. Take him to your local guitar store, (preferably a mom & pop shop if you have one) and make him play different models... Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, etc. If he wants a Fender, the Player series is an excellent choice, as is this model. But the market for good guitars is wide open these days.

Ok, will do, just like to have some inside info before I go into an establishment. It's not like the old days when people behind the counter really wanted to help you.

That's why I suggested a Mom & Pop. Big box stores could care less about service these days, whereas That's the only advantage small shops have, so they tend to be more helpful. Are you near a major metro area?

Honestly, a lot of it will be up to your son lol. And your budget, of course!

I'd take them and see how they react and what catches their interest, and go from there. You don't have to (and probably shouldn't) buy the first guitar he falls in love with at the store right then and there, ya know?

But yea there's a ton of subtleties when it comes to things like body shape, neck shape, weight, appearance... and they all matter!

Basswood is very soft. In my experience, some of the screws got loose in it. Since then, I try to avoid basswood, but craftsmanship on Aerodyne series is really high otherwise.

Not on Musician's Friend, but CCM has it for $899.99 if you're interested. I put it in another deal:
