Picked up a pair for myself, but thought I'd share my research articles on The Fives. I was between these and Audioengine A5+, which are around the same price when not on sale.
The Fives classic retro styling, multiple reviews in favor of, and the deep discount from retail won me over.
The speaker grill on the front is magnetic and removable, so you can swap between an industrial or retro style. Metal control knob and retro styling was the icing on the cake. Note the speaker cable connecting the pair is proprietary, but when you read about the reason why you'll forgive it. Also, these speakers will recognize when a subwoofer is optionally attached and adjust their sound automatically, which basically means they are upgradable should you choose to.

What's the reason? Couldn't find it in the articles.
My bad - I knew that question would come up, lmao - I couldn't remember while writing that: it's in this video review around 3:18
TL;DR
The tweeter and woofer in the second speaker has its own separate amplifiers, powered via the cable. The advantage is much greater performance, the disadvantage is you're limited to the 15 ft length of the included cable - or you can buy an extension from Klipsch.
For my usage, 15 ft is overkill, but good to know if you need more space between them an extension is available.
In the video they also share that some of the speaker components are from Klipsch's higher-end (and more expensive) Reference Premiere speaker series.
I really loved my Fives with a R-121SW ($200 open box best buy). As mentioned, the Fives implement a 80Hz low-cut filter to its own speakers when a subwoofer is connected to relive itself of lower-bass work. The reason I didn't keep mine was a very slight his; I sit just 2 feet away from them AND am super sensitive to hiss, so thats the only downside

My fives setup sounds amazing. The digital audio source goes into a smsl dac into a tube preamp into the fives aux port.

I'm kind of worried that once I receive these I will have found myself a new (and expensive) interest/hobby. I was just researching tube amps last night... And now also looking at subwoofers, since supposedly the sound gets even better!

lol you doubled down for sure!
Yes this can be a dangerous slope, but $400 is a very high-value way to get started and know what's "worth it" for you. Honestly for most people this + a $400 subwoofer is a very satisfying solution that very hard to beat even at +50%-100% the price
i want the advice of the experts on how the sound quality will be ?
I just received mine today, but I'm not an expert. So far they are really awesome...
First impressions:
They are physically bigger than I realized (I didn't actually check measurements, just looked at videos).
Build quality, fit-finish-feel is excellent. These originally retailed at near $1,000.
Firmware update(s) took about <45 minutes because I needed to apply two, one of which is a one-time major update which requires a USB thumb-drive. All other firmware updates are done through the mobile app, which is nice. And it was worth the wait, the updates added tons of functionality.
Capable of going very loud. I tested them at a high volume and felt like I was in a live rock concert... I'm in a condo building, so for my neighbors sake I didn't try to go louder than that. I didn't notice any distortions at low or high volume.
I definitely do not need a subwoofer. I may get one only because it supposedly opens up more of the mid-tones, as the speakers would route all the bass to the woofer. There's plenty of bass for my little apartment.
There is a slight "white noise" coming from the speakers when nothing is playing. This may be due to the speaker amplification or possibly some interference. If it is completely quiet in the room, I can hear it at about 1-1.5 feet from the speaker.
I'm considering designing a new workspace to accommodate these. A larger desk, to accommodate a new monitor, new chair, and other PC/WFH stuff. My current desk is only ~3' wide, so these monitors look ridiculous on it. It looks like using a Ferrari to drive a block.
