It will continue in 2024 but the big change is the rebate will be done at the point of sale itself so you get instant rebate and don't have to wait until next tax year to get the credit. Now, this was news recently posted on some reputed news articles but I don't have a way to verify it officially from IRS or other official sources.

I would wait to buy until the US model 3 and Y are refreshed, which are in China. Tests have shown the newer 3 to have A LOT better road noise reduction and smoother ride with less vibrations. Those are much needed improvements to these entry-level Teslas.

For those with noise complaints would it make sense for a stereo shop to remove all the interior carpet and use fatmat/ dynamat for sound deadening? Surely it will cost 2500$ to do the entire car but would it be worth it?
That will work on any car it's not really exclusive to this one. That job is just a ton of labor, speaking of someone who's done it before

Need a sounding board..

Currently with a 2017 model x 100DL
115k miles (24000 a year)
248 on full charge battery
Free unlimited supercharging fit life
Just upgraded mcu

This is my second (upgraded from S)

Worth a trade In for new MY?

Thoughts?
I wouldn't. That unlimited free supercharging is worth it till the car dies. You are literally driving for free.

The AWD and range increase makes this a decently easy choice now, frankly these cars last forever, teslas ability to make the car an appliance means youll likely keep it in your family for years upon years, youll either give it to your parents, sister, kid, etc after 8 years. $4500 over 8 years is only extra $562. Its almost "regret insurance" at that point, if every year you get into a situation where you wish you had awd and slightly more range than youll kick yourself for not having gotten this. (I also think the LR has subwoofers and rwd doesnt... but someone would have to confirm that for me)
Be careful comparing a Tesla to an appliance.

Just look at the failure rate of refrigerators manufactured in the last 10 years.

I'm also sold on the cooling seats. They're a necessity in CA.

yes, even requires fluid changes.

Surely you mean if totally swapping out the system or something, right, which is incredibly rare?

Teslas require no routine maintenance fluid changes at all, other than brake fluid every few years because brake fluid is naturally hygroscopic.

Do you know how your battery is made?
Do you know how gasoline is?

it's FAR worse for the environment.

Plus, once they make a battery, that's it. You keep using it for a decade or more AND it's like 99% recyclable after that too! Every few hundred miles you need new gasoline, the old stuff having turned mostly into waste heat and pollution.

Two things-

1) It'll be applicable at point of sale--- this gives you the $7500 up front, so you'd have a smaller car loan (if taking a loan) and you don't need to wait till the follow years tax return to benefit.

2) Under the proposed rules that just came out, the credit is now effectively refundable

#2 is a big one.

It means even if you don't have $7500 in tax liability for the year because your income was too low you get the full $7500 at point of sale and IRS will not claw any difference back.

That is unexpected, but great news for buyers.

Income caps still apply though-- if you take the credit and make too MUCH they'll claw the $7500 back in full.

FWIW I expected to deeply miss them when I traded my Lexus for a Tesla (it gets pretty warm here in NC too).

But being able to just use the app on my phone to set cabin temp to 72 before I even walk out the door, and having the whole car (not just the seat) be the right temp by the time I get in ended up making me not miss the cooled seats at all.

Plus they're much easier to clean without all the little holes/grooves that let the AC through the cushions.

I don't think BYD is the best, they are the cheapest for what you get and why they are #1. They forced Tesla to drop it's prices in China multiple times and Tesla can't compete where BYD competes (sans import taxes). I think Geely is better than BYD since they have engineering and design expertise when they got Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus.

On the political side BYD is also making a lot of money along with other Chinese brands selling cars in Russia after American and European car companies pulled out. I think Geely is also selling in Russia but they also have a factory in Ukraine.

The only Chinese made EV you can get in the US will be the Volvo EX30 and Volvo is "side-stepping" the 27.5% Chinese import tax by having their US factory making the bigger EX90 EV. There is a manufacturing loophole to the Chinese import tax. BYD can't wait to get their cars in the US and actually make EV buses in a Lancaster, CA factory.

I do enjoy the wheelsboy youtube channel that reviews Chinese EVs. You'll see why Tesla can't compete. He'll actually import Chinese EVs for you if you are outside of North America.

RIP Vinfast. Haha!
If you want Chinese made Tesla and you reside in NA, you can get them in Canada. It is now cheaper to build a Model 3/Y in China and ship across the Pacific Ocean, pay the tariff than making a Tesla Model 3/Y in USA.

It doesn't improve the value of your home unless you own the system.
Value goes up regardless.
If your electric bill is set to X amount that is lower than the average for the size of your home or community then that is desirable for the next owner as well.

But from my perspective it's best to own the system. Pay the full amount; don't finance. It's the same as putting up a stone patio that enhances your home value. In this case the panels also save you from inevitable electric costs incurred throughout the year.

The big change comes from the fact that the dealer can apply for the "up to" $7,500 credit on your behalf so that you get the credit as an instant discount up front rather than having to apply for it during the following year's tax return.

Of course, you can still opt to wait until following year's taxes to receive the credit if you still wish to do so. And, if you purchase more than two electric vehicles, and are still eligible to receive a credit (assuming you have enough liability to cover it), the subsequent EV purchases beyond two can only be done traditionally during tax return time. This transfer of credits to the dealer for an instant discount only applies for up to two purchases per calendar year, and per tax filing status.

If you opt for the instant credit up front at time of sale, you will need to provide the dealership with your prior year's AGI information and estimate of current year's AGI. It is not up to the dealer to determine true eligibility. You will need to sign a form saying that you believe you qualify based on the income thresholds. If, by chance you do not during tax time, you will have had agreed to the IRA clawing back the discount you received as a tax due in addition to any interest.

Don't believe any of the number by manufacturers. It is not just Tesla, every one of them is like that.
If you are doing 55 to 60 on a windly day with average 70s to 80s degree, then you do get close to that. If you doing 75 and on a cold day, you can forget about the range.

I do suggest people test drive the alternatives before getting a Tesla. Especially a cheaper Bolt EUV.

Many don't review what they really need. 75% of vehicles have one driver on the road. Just look around when you are at a red light. One person driving a huge truck or SUV.
95% of the time your car is parked.
You can get a small EV then just rent a larger one for family vacations. If you are running the soccer team and have to haul everything then get buy a larger EV.
It makes sense to get an EV in California because of high gas prices and more EV charging.
If you can't charge at home or work don't get an EV. If you have a plethera of mechanics and cheap gas then get an ICE car or a hybrid.

If you really cared about the sourcing of battery components and policital stuff you should vote for people that care about it but many politicians care more about who the speaker of the house is. An environmental president and the EPA are the only things that ever helped the environment in the US (and to an extent, the world). Democratic and Republican presidents have helped and hurt the environment so political parties don't matter.

If you are dead set on a Tesla I would wait for the newer one. Tesla usually price drops before they do a refresh but I think this cheaper model uses the LFP batteries that you can charge 100% without degradation which is probably why they were okay with the drop in range.

Very true.

That's my second most-wanted feature waiting for behind the improvements to a smoother and quieter ride.

The decision is really on battery price? Assuming 20 MPG and $3 gas (which it is not). 8K would get you around 55K miles. Yeah you are not replacing a battery that much.
I paid $2.92/gal yesterday

Honda are reliable cars BUT they have shitty paint job. Their clear coat sucks. I know cause I had a civic, accord and an element. I clay, polish, sealed, waxed. Nothing will prevent it from oxidizing and peeling. There should be a recall on their crappy paint job!!!
Honda does make terrible paint. It scratches just looking at it wrong.
