Hey guys,
Some advice if you're going to buy these
1) you need an amp. The best you'll really get for the money and is a good amount nonetheless is the JDS Labs Atom or Atom +
2);these are open back, you'll hear lots of background noise but the sound stage will feel incredibly immersive
3) if you have to ask "is this for me" it's not. These are amazing and sound great, and unless you're the kind of person who's willing to one day drop a car payment for headphones, save your money and time, spend no more than $350 for 95% of the experience with a midrange Sennheiser, Behringer, etc headphoneb+ Atom amp.

The truth is, it's not life-changing

Check out Audio Science Reviews for more on this kind of stuff
$1k then I'll bite. $1,150 is basically the new price now.
These used to sell for $1600 and still do at most retailers, so this is a Slick Deal if you're in the market for this. I think the MSRP is $1800.

Not true at all, Sennheiser is dropping their prices to compete. All of the HD800's direct competitors like the Focal Clear, Hifiman Arya, Audeze LCD-X, ZMF Aeolus to some extent, are the same price or cheaper than the HD800S.

They seem to hold their value well, used, usually sell by $900 and they might be several years old.

At least by comparison with other top brands, you'll won't get a better deal. Wish their headphone amps were also on sale.

Who buys $1,000 headphones? Let me ask this again, who goes on slick deals to look for $1,000 headphones?

I own these along with a lot of other headphones.

Personally for tonality and overall musicality (for most genres): Focal Clear ($890 on headphones.com)
For symphonies/orchestra, acoustic, movies/gaming: Sennheiser HD 800S (that's because that huge soundstage helps)

You can find used HD800S for less than $800 on forums and resale websites.

I own (along with a dozen different amps):
Senn HD800S
Senn HD660
Senn HD598
Senn PC38X
Focal Clear
Focal Radiance (closed equivalent of Clear)
Sony MDR-Z7
V-MODA M100
Sony XM3 and XM4 Noise Cancelling
Philips Fidelio X2
Audeze Maxwell (PC/Xbox)
PS Inzone H7

a lot of earphones as well but that's a separate category and story

People who like nice headphones, obviously. I'm listening to $600 wired earbuds, people like different things.

By now these are worth $900.

Source: I am a professional assessor of value.

People can end their headphone journey by getting a Sony 7506 and be done.

Uff man that's a lot. I had more but cut down as I felt there is no need in keeping cans or things I don't use. I will be selling off some amps, headphones, earphones, speakers etc etc just to keep the ones I really spend my time with and invest the rest of the money in my retirement or stocks. Even with so many headphones I still only find myself reaching for 2 maybe 3 at all times depending on use.
