I just wish these included D&D Beyond versions as well. I get that they're two different products but definitely hurts to buy twice.

This is not what happened. They got caught pulling a sketchy move, spent the better part of a month deflecting and gaslighting their fans, and eventually caved after half their customers cancelled their d&d beyond subscriptions. Then they released some of their content under the creative commons license, but certainly not everything.

Not buying any WoTC items after they tried to record an open license.
You realize they not only reversed this to be in favor of the Creative Commons and compensation for people, but also that nearly EVERY company does this. If you still use any Microsoft or Xbox products they did the same thing with the Xbox One when they first announced it. They tried to go DRM only pertaining to the original purchase, and you couldn't resell after.

This is normal business practice (unfortunately) for many companies, but at least Wizards backpedaled.

Furthermore, it wouldn't have been hard to get around the licensing they had before. Publishers would create a "campaign" book that was agnostic, then create a PDF supplement that is free (or cheap) that goes along with D&D, Pathfinder, or whatever TTRPG.

I'm not on wizards side, but how quickly it blew up with people swearing off D&D within a week before Wizards can reply was as childish (by wizards) as the FIRST draft that was distributed and thus leaked that led to this.

No DM's guide, but think I'll pick up the pair of everything books for the expanded subclasses.

Everything written here is wrong. Wizards lied about it being a draft, at least one 3rd party company had actually signed the OGL revision as requested by WOTC and it had to be rescinded after they changed course. WOTC is destroying D&D and they are clearing these books out because their new 6e by any other name will be more confined to their proprietary VTT. Don't believe anything WOTC says; they're proven liars who don't want you to actually even play their games, they want you on a subscription and want their brand to be a lifestyle brand instead. Isn't happening.

That's the great thing about intellectual property. You can do with it as you please. I am sure if you had some IP you'd want to use it the way you want without ridicule.

D&D could have died with second edition. It didn't, someone invested in its future, evolution and propagation.

Except when you make statements about a legal agreement you've developed for 14 years and then turn around after an entire hobby has become dependent on your agreement and pretend it never meant what you said it meant both in the agreement and in your own public documentation. They weren't trying to protect IP, they were trying to undo something they didn't have the authority to undo because they quote "feel their players are being undermonitized." It was a play to use legal threats to extract enough by force from every 3rd party that no one would be able to afford to publish outside the DMs Guild, which they could then choose whether to shut down - as well as pretend that they own the concept of VTTs or animated gifs on a tabletop. It faced backlash from every corner not because anyone overreacted, but because it was that bad. They learned nothing, they are just slow walking what they still think they can get away with now.

My son is in a d&d club at school and plays almost every day with friends in a couple of campaigns. I don't know much about it beyond that, would any of this stuff be a good Christmas gift for him? I know they pretty much make their own campaigns up as they go if that makes a difference
Without knowing what your son has, on the list of items on sale, there are 2 "Campaign Cases" for sale - one for Creatures and one for Terrain.

These would have the biggest immediate impact for any games he and his club play. And even if they have something similar, it would help expand their options.

The books are going to be hot or miss. They may have copies of them digitally they can share, and if so the books wouldn't have as much need.

Great prices, but the one thing that I really had my eye out for is the one with the lowest discount (Warriors of Krynn boardgame - $50 at 26% off).
For $15 more you can get the D&D hardback adventure book and a DM screen along with the board game:

Some solid deals. That was a quick drop of $80 for 2 Waterdeep books, an accessory pack and a D&D Campaign Case.

You feel strongly about this.

I've never played but I enjoy reading the manuals and the game set up. Think I'll buy a few things.

Any recommendations?
