This IS this weeks deals thread. Don't need to start up a new one.

There's a conference call this morning with corp and the SM's. We'll know a lot more after that (or maybe we won't). There's a new CEO. What changes if any will he make? How many stores are closing? Will there be a list? How safe is Bonus Cash? Will vendors continue to ship? Will RA try to sell the company? Is there a buyer? Can they settle with the DOJ? Will they lay-off employees? Will they immediately liquidate the front end of the store? Or will it be business as usual? What influence will Bank of America have over RA's operation? Lots of questions. Anything can happen. I personally don't see how RA turns things around. Nothing has worked so far. If it were my company, I would get rid of the Bonus Cash program and go with lower prices with no rewards or a reward program that's simple and easy to use. I would completely change the inventory. RA carries so many things that don't sell. Actually, I'd shut down the front end and just keep the pharmacy open. All the front end does is lose money. RA has to reduce the amount of money it loses every quarter. It would be nice for them to make a profit. Business as usual isn't going to work.

I think a lot of what happens depends on how Wall St feels about the new CEO. I'd say that it's positive since B of A gave RA the money. The CEO is going to have to make changes but they may not be changes that we like as couponers. RA could also be sold. That's a very real possibility. RA is worth a lot more than its stock price. Or maybe it's not. I don't know. I'm a RA bull. Imagine what the shorts are going to say this morning.

i was at my RA over the weekend, which still has 4 in one town. I did notice those signs you mentioned, so maybe it is coming. "new lower price" was on several items i looked at.

I'm in RA almost every day. The majority of customers I see in the Los Angeles area are workers coming in to buy beer. RA's product mix is what an older lady would buy. RA needs to connect with their customers. A gardener isn't coming in there to buy Nexxus or tampons. He wants beer, something to eat, and maybe some cigarettes. He might pick up Tide on the way home. If he has a prescription, he'll go to RA because he's going there anyway. RA needs to connect with this guy because he's their future. He doesn't care anything about Bonus Cash. He doesn't even care about price that much. He wants the beer to be in stock and to get in and out in a hurry and maybe use the restroom. RA needs to sell this guy more stuff. 7-11 sells him coffee and food in addition to the beer. RA just sells the beer and makes no money.

They are not shutting the entire corp, just stores. Not all stores are going to close and since this isn't the deals thread, I'll go make one unless somebody does.

Are you saying hot food? Like a 7-Eleven? That would be a giant change.

As someone else said, it's totally different in NJ and PA. No booze in the drugstores or the convenience stores. In NJ, there are a very limited few grocery stores where you can buy wine and beer. Other than that, you go to a liquor store. It's totally fascinating to us when we drive to Florida. There is beer everywhere! They sell single cans of beer, which can only be for drinking in the car, right?

It would be hard for women to get used to not being able to buy beauty and feminine products at drugstores. I mean, if you don't coupon then that stuff is cheaper at grocery stores, but we're kind of programmed to go to drug stores. Plus it makes sense that they sell Tylenol and other meds because of the link to pharmaceuticals.

Also, did Rite Aid really fill that many more Opioid prescriptions that CVS and Walgreen's? That's weird.

Since someone said this is a deal thread (too), I'll drop here that the cashier didn't scan both of my $5 off (5/15 and 5/25) before applying BC
and the AM was able to do something outside the transaction - scanned the 5/25, I had to put my phone number in, and gave it back to me as cash.

I kept it simple when I saw my cat food was in stock (has been OOS even online) - instead of doing Dove for which I have BCC, I got JointFlex and 2 bags. Thought it would be simple.

When the little screen asked how I wanted receipt (print, email etc) I was told not to touch it but when they decided to end the transaction it froze. Had to reboot, and then AM did the thing that resulted in $5 back. Not sure if that affected anything. Online shows I earned the expected BC.

If you're doing the P&G deal or just want fabric softener, the Downy that's in the ad for $3.49 is ringing up at $1.37 and counts for the deal. It was on clearance a few weeks ago but they got more in and it's still on clearance. There are some other great clearance finds on the laundry aisle. Downy Calm sheets are $2 (reg $8) and the large Gain fabric softener was 4.75 (reg $16 I think). Big Win cleaner with bleach was $1.09 (reg $4.39). I'd price check everything with a 50% off tag because it all came up at 75% off. My store may be late with putting up tags so it's ymmv.

My point is that national chains may not make sense anymore. SoCal is very different than PA or Florida. Stores need to adapt to the areas they serve. If you have a planogram for the entire nation it's not going to work. With all of the cosmetics theft, it doesn't make sense for the drugstores to carry it. I wonder if that high end cosmetics store (I forget the name) has the same problem with theft. Somebody was saying that the future may be where you have to swipe your ID and/or credit card to walk into a store so that you get charged for everything you take. I think that Amazon already does something like this. Of course, you can go the CVS route and keep on raising prices and make the people who aren't stealing have to pay for it. I wonder why stores don't have security guards at the front door. They have to do something. Making us pay for it or going out of business is not the answer. It's clear that the voters are too stupid to pass laws that put criminals in jail so we as a society deserve this. We have a DA in Los Angeles that's destroying the city and surrounding communities by letting everybody out of jail and the voters can't be bothered to go sign a recall petition. I'm sure that they'll vote him back in office when his election comes up. We pay so much for everything now and the quality of life has gone so far downhill.

I was thinking about this the other day. I'm wondering how many people steal stuff from Wal-Mart and then go home and list it on the Wal-Mart website. That's arbitrage 2023 style.

If you do yard sales, nobody will pay anything for your stuff because they all think that it's stolen or that you didn't pay anything for it because of the YT videos. And then the YT idiots will do yard sale videos where they sell big bottles of lotion for $2 that cost $15 in the store and think that they had a great sale and are helping their followers. No, they're destroying the market. They must all live in no tax states because sales tax here is $1.50 on a $15 bottle of lotion so how are you selling it for $2? You've got gas cost ($6 a gallon here in SoCal), coupon cost (not cheap especially with priority mail and insurance), plus your time. All of that to lose money on the deal. Maybe if you submit 2000 rebates for the same item you can sell it for $2 but that's all that I can think of. The manufacturers need to realize what a bad system they've created. Instead of tightening things up, it makes it too easy to take advantage of all of the loopholes. If you're trying to just buy things with coupons and not do anything wrong, you're going to get swept under the carpet.

I'm not sure how my above comment relates to the thread other than what I was saying to Kiki about what a bad situation all of the theft has created. Theft was a very big problem for RA and a major factor in why they went bankrupt. They closed one of their top preforming stores due to theft. It was in a nice area but the shopping center got too dangerous to go to and the employees were afraid to go to work. And then, of course, the landlord wanted a rent increase.

They are only shutting down 154 stores for this reorganization.
They're listed in this article.
