I bought both the Denon 760 the Onkyo 6050 from Costco and the Onkyo is so much better in several ways. The Onkyo sounds better with more punch at lower volumes. The Atmos sounds much better on the Onkyo and what I was most impressed with on the Onkyo is the simulated surround coming from stereo signals, it somehow knows to keep the voices coming from the front and center speaker and other sounds coming from the back and ceiling speakers and makes old TV shows sound like they are in surround. It is the same with music on YouTube where the band is coming from the front and center speakers and the sub but there is just enough coming from the rear and ceiling speakers that it just fills the listing area perfectly. I am super happy with the Onkyo 6050 and for the $350 price range, I do not think it can be beat.

So would y'all recommend the Onkyo TX-NR6050 or the AVR-S760H - Refurbished for 5 speakers and a TV for the outside porch?

I think this is a beautiful deal for a low cost zone 2 video receiver. Looking for an option to have my game consoles to my son's room so I can play another or watch tv

Strongly recommend AGAINST this model. I got two from Costco (at this price), both would randomly resync the HDMI resulting in a (flash of) blank screen and sound cut off despite changing cables, source devices/inputs, and even monitors (It even did it a couple times when I was not outputting video and just listening to music.) I'm sure not everyone will have the same experience with this device, but it was so annoying because it was truly random. Some days it would do it five times in an hour. Other times it wouldn't do it for multiple days. I replaced this with the Denon x2800 from the recent deal and haven't had a single problem (that deal page also has another user, jimschoice , who did the same thing for the same reason.)

Mine has done the same, I had to lower resolution output to stop a flash to static rhatbi had to power off and on for. My only real hesitation

Completely agree about how the Onkyo handles stereo signals. I listen to a lot of vinyl and I used to listen exclusively in stereo (the way you're really supposed to listen to records). Two channels, no sub. Everything else sounded horrible on the Yamaha I had. When I replaced it with the Onkyo, I decided to give the Dolby surround mode a try, and I was kinda blown away. It keeps most of the sound in the front three channels and sub, but really fills out the room with the rears and Atmos speakers without making it sound unbalanced or over-processed. I like it so much, I almost exclusively listen in that mode unless I'm trying to really pick apart a pressing.

It also sounds great with movies and games and I've had no handshake issues because I made sure I used good quality, correctly rated cables and (very importantly) properly set up the HDMI ports in the settings menu.

I have had serious issues with Onkyo in the past. I tried two over the past 10yrs or so and both had problems which required servicing. I won't buy one again. I recommend Yamaha.

I second Yamaha - best for reliability.

Had the same issue. Spent HOURS and DAYS troubleshooting this same issue. New cords, different equipment, customer service calls.. finally returned it to Costco after like 9 months of pain and got a Denon.

Interesting, I currently have a Yamaha TSR-7850. Have a Sony turntable connected and use 5.1 surround - it sounds great.

Generally, I've noted that Denon is quite a bit pricier than Onkyo. Any particular reasons?
A few years ago Denon was bought by Masimo (A healthcare company). Since then they have raised prices far more than any other brand, while at the same time cutting corners and using less expensive / lower quality components in their products (There are other AV forums that go into this much deeper). They are a mainstream consumer brand and are not worth a premium over any other brand.

They have also started charging a la carte pricing, where you may want certain feature but you have to pay extra for it. On some of their models these options can literally cost you as much as the AVR !!!

A few years ago everyone raised prices and had to change components because of a pandemic!
As a matter of fact some had to file for bankruptcy(Onkyo) because of it!
Sold twice since then and still in the hole over it!

Who owns the brand and equating that to how it performs is a silly argument!
If that was the case Onkyo's parent company owns Klipsch.
How often do people talk negatively about them!

Better components doesn't necessarily mean you will hear a difference(there are plenty of discussions on other AV forums on that), they just get to charge more for it.

Denon giving you the option to buy improvements(NOT required) is a good thing!
TBH it's only 3 main options(to be 4 soon!)
1. Editor app $20 adds adjustments that Dirac has.
Think of being able to add 2.1 to your current 2.0 AVR for $20 instead of having to buy a whole new AVR!
2. MultiEQ-X $199 gives ALL the adjustment advantages of BOTH Dirac Live & Dirac Live Bass Control, without having to buy a new AVR!
3. Dirac Live $349(DLBC next year $499)
There is a reason why people constantly compare Audyssey(XT32) & Dirac, they are both good!
Having the option for Dirac and not "required"(ie Onkyo/Pioneer/Integra) to pay for it is a bonus!

People like to say you don't pay for Dirac with Onkyo/Pioneer/Integra but you actually do.
You take Dirac out of them and they are not as appealing.
The main appeal is Dirac, people mention that all the time!

Take for instance the new $2800 RZ70
All the new features Denon/Marantz has already(+ 2 more sub outs, bass, shaker compatibility) & were added over the RZ50!
The only thing not included with Denon is Dirac Live.
This feature set goes all the way down to the 3800!
I will argue DL cost is built in into the $2800 somewhere.

As you can see just in this thread the worth is subjective, anyone saying otherwise has an agenda IMO.

I still have the Onkyo 605 from 2007. It still sounds great! This is a good price and if I was compelled to cut some holes in my ceiling for Atmos I would jump on this.

If your only needing a five speaker unit, why not try shopgoodwill.com ? There are so many 5.1 receivers (non HDMI) available. Granted you may get a lemon, however each of the nine 5.1 optical receivers I have picked up have been in working condition. Average price paid for each was $29 shipped. Just get an optical cable to connect from TV to receiver and a GE/Philips universal remote (both made by Jasco) with at least four inputs. I.e. Yamaha power is up channel button using one code. And to power off, is the power button using another code. Hence you would consume two inputs.

Echoing an earlier recommendation for the Denon AVR-S970H. Flawless with solid, clean, and detailed amplification.

This receiver drove me nuts. It took 3 to 4 seconds to re sync sound over HDMI from my TV every time I skipped commercials. Returned it after a year to Costco and got the Denon X2800. So so much better. It sounds better to me, no delay in audio coming back on, and the volume control through CEC works much better. The Onkyo would stop responding to volume up command's and I'd have to use its IR remote. That issue went away with the Denon. Can't believe I lived with that Onkyo for over a year!
