And even if you make a mistake and a balance expires before your renew date, it's actually fixable. A balance expiration date can be extended another 90 days if you apply a new refill card. Apply a new $50 card and the expiration date will extend 90 days from the date it was applied. I actually made this mistake last year (had a balance that was set to expire before being used for renewal), and I worked around it by just applying small-value cards every few months.

I saw that Target usually runs this sale every 7-8 weeks, and going by that, one should be coming up in late Dec. Maybe I can risk it

I don't think there's a huge risk in waiting, as Target generally runs this promo about every other month, but I'd be surprised if you found another deal meaningfully better.

Generally I order separately to maximize the discount and buy enough cards to get me a year's amount of service. I have a spouse on Verizon's prepaid plan… $25 per month after loyalty discount and enabling auto-pay. Factoring in this target discount, I'm only paying $22.50 per month, and no taxes.
