For picture optimization I used this as baseline, it's the Q650G (better version of this TV) and changed a few things as necessary from there. (https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews...d/settings)

For performance improvement, i first installed Projectivity Launcher from the play store (https://play.google.com/store/app...rojengmenu), you can also install FLauncher from the play store and see which one you like better (https://play.google.com/store/app....flauncher). Both of these are open source, ad-free and allow you to customize the home screen. You aren't constantly bombarded with promos from Google.

Once you are happy with either of the above launchers you can connect via adb to your TV and run the commands from this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidT...hromecast/). This disables the primary google home launcher and lets you launch one of the ad free ones from the ones I linked above when you press the home button.

Next I installed tvQuickActionsPro (https://play.google.com/store/app...ickactions) this lets you remap buttons of popular streaming apps that you can uninstall/disable via adb. One example is disabling YouTube, installing SmartTube from here (https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube/releases). This is YouTube for android TV but with adblocking and sponsorblock in built and remapped the YouTube button on the TV to SmartTube.

I also uninstalled most of the extra streaming services to remap their buttons, prevent them from using system resources and disabled these apps which I found to be bloat but you can keep let them be on in the background if you want. This disables alexa, google assistant.

Compared to the '22 models looks like:

6 series > Q750G > 5 series > Q650G > 4 series > S450G

So almost directly in between the old 4 and 5 series TCL TVs if it really is the exact same specs as the Q6...but I dunno about that. Someone on AVS said it had a lower max brightness compared to the Q6 when comparing them.
i paid $150 for the 50 inch. SO 65 inch should be $250 to be a great deal. This is meh !

How does this compare to the older 4k TCL 5 series S517/S515? Will I see a big jump in quality difference? Or is it worse?

Very nice prices. I still absolutely love my 2022 55S555 so I think I'd be satisfied with one of these, but everyone in the house is happy with Roku and may not be too keen on Google TV. Might be worth it, even if we have to add a Roku Stick or Ultra. BF deals may be slightly better but probably not much.

Looks like a direct competitor to Hisense A65K. Not sure what the difference is between this and the Q6 (which RTing reviewed).
I'm also very interested in how this TCL Q5 compares vs the Hisense A65K.

I got a 32" for 800$ in 2006. I would say flat screen tvs are one thing that has not increased in value over the last 20 years. That tv is still working and the 65 Hisense I got for Black Friday in 2019 for $300 just died.

I like tcl but I don't like 60hz. I think I got a 43" 4k 120z for less than this just regular price 3 years ago at any big box store… I think this is special because of qled but it's an immediate no for me

what 43" has true 120hz for under $250?

Yep! And I don't think the extended holiday policy is in effect now ( I checked best buy for return policy) , but should be posted soon. But we could be wrong, but, I'm waiting for the SUPER BF and CM tv sales to kick in, since we are so close to slick deal time of the year on tv's.
FYI... Just bot a freezer from BB and the holiday return policy WAS in place for that sale.

What's a better deal? This or the 55" Series 6 also available for $400 at BB? Mostly using for watching movies at 1080p

If your willing to spend the extra money, the tcl r6 series is much better as it has FALD, 120hz native, and mini-leds. You can also check rtings.com for the review and see how they compare.
