Just did this deal and wanted to share my experience. YMMV.

I am not a current Verizon customer. I ordered from Walmart Sunday night. Tax was $3 and change. Phone arrived today. Activation was easy and basically completed by the phone itself with a new number. I then set up an account on Verizon.com. There already a bill in the system for a little more than $120 for activation, month of service and taxes. Next bill estimate showed about $80.

After playing with the phone a few hours, I contacted Verizon by chat to cancel the account to make sure I am not charged an activation fee and so that Verizon only bills me the prorated use amount for 1 day. Long story short, Verizon waived the activation fee, charged the full $36 for the phone and gave me a random credit that did not cover most of the monthly fee and taxes. I think at first, they wanted a total of about $70 ($36 plus like $34 in fees). I told the representative that made no sense given that I am cancelling the account within 1 day so the prorated cost should be about 3 or 4 dollars at most. Chat representative gave me the run around but started applying what appeared to be random discounts. At the end of the chat and subsequent follow up phone call, I was able to get the service fee reduced from $34 to $0. Frankly, this was more trouble than it was worth.

Given that Verizon's unlock policy automatically unlocks the phone upon purchase (as opposed to activation), I expect this phone will unlock in 60 days.
Wait, so as a new customer you didn't go to a Verizon store to pay off phone as Op suggested, instead you cancelled service via chat first then paid off the $36 for the phone afterwards online? Is that the short version of what you did? Thanks.

In a nutshell yes. I did not drive to a Verizon store because of comments in this forum about getting pushback at the store. Wasn't worth the hassle. I just did everything by chat and phone. My out of pocket is less than $40. Paid $36 to Verizon by credit card on the website and paid less than $4 in tax to Walmart. I expect my phone to get unlocked in 60 days. It should but I did not verify with customer service. CSR wasn't very helpful. Couldn't get them to comprehend basic math. It worked out at the end.

I tried online chat to cancel the line. The rep told service can be cancelled at the end of first billing cycle and can't be cancelled right away. I told her I'd I activated this morning and it's within 3 days of activation. She told that's not the policy and asked where did I find this information. I told her I will call an agent

tried to use the "chat with us" to cancel, but the chat link doesn't do anything at all. no popups, or a chat box.

I guess ignorance is bliss. I asked to cancel the account by chat and received zero pushback. The only pushback was with respect to bizarre fees for service that totaled $34. Nobody could explain why I had to pay this amount other than "it is for taxes" and "service charge". I just told them I am not paying fees they can't explain and that I would only pay the prorated amount for the day I used the phone. It took a while but the $34 in fees were removed.

After cancellation, when will I see the final bill?
Chat is claiming need to wait 30 days to see the final amount.

On the online account, it is showing for Oct I owe $123.79, then for Nov, then for next bill, I have credit $63.52.
I kept telling CS that means I am getting charged $123.79 - $63.52 = $60.27. CS kept telling me the total due is $0.
I am not sure I want to believe the CS.

For existing Verizon users, did you use your current active sim card to activate or the one Walmart shipped it with? Does it matter?
I activated using walmart sim. Just went to account -manage line - switch or upgrade device- enter phone details n new sim details - activate.
Once done with test calls .
If you wanna use old phone,
Follow same process to activate: enter old phone and old sim details in above steps.

The A54 deal from back in late April/early May was a better deal in my opinion.
