No, he's correct, that is too much for almost all individuals.

General practice internal medicine physician here. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and can result in toxicity with too much. Moderately high doses can result in bone break down or kidney stone. Toxicity at higher levels is uncommon but can result in even worse problems. Unless you have had a extremely deficient level on labs and you we're specifically instructed by a physician, 10,000 IU a day is way more than you should be taking without medical supervision.

I rarely have anyone on such a high dose, and those that do need it only take it for a short period of time as a loading dose and then transition to a lower maintenance dose thereafter. In more than 20 years of practice, I've not had a single patient that needed that high of a dose for more than a few months.

National Academy of Medicine has defined the "tolerable upper intake level" (UL) for vitamin D as 100 mcg (4000 international units) daily for healthy adults and children 9 to 18 years.

I Take 2 5000IU's daily for D deficiency per doctor's order. Last blood work, I was right at the top line for maximum benefit. Lots of people are vitamin D deficient these days, even folks who spend time in the sun. Worth it to get your vitamin D levels checked.

Make sure to take it with K2. When combined with vitamin K2, vitamin D3 helps move calcium into your bones (where it's needed most), which prevents it from forming deposits in your arteries and blood vessels. Take D3 in the morning with fat and K2 at night.

5000 IU is more than double than what's necessary . It could even be detrimental . unless you take it once every couple of days.

I think it's fine. My doctor prescribed 50,000 IU for me to take once a week.
