The fact that the speakers (dock) can't be used as a standalone Google Nest speakers blows my mind and keeps me from making this purchase. It makes no sense to me why it requires the tablet to be on the dock to play music.

I'm not here to complain. I do think that what this product offers isn't attractive. If they included the feature I so wanted, and it cost a lot more, I'd likely still feel the same way = not enough value, or not worth the cost.

We (people in SlickDeals) make decisions like that one left and right. I don't see anything wrong with stating why I'm abstaining from purchasing a product listed on sale. I hope that other buyers that may be more familiar with a product would do the same for me.
See, this is being obtuse. Don't lump yourself in with other SDers.

You neither understand why it would (and should) cost more for features you claim are must haves, nor would you buy it even if it did have these features.

This is precisely why they didn't include this feature.

This is a first. Let's see if they keep making them at all. They should support it for like 3 years.
Google had the Nexus line developed with Asus
the first Nexus 7 shipped Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and eventually got Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop). That was two major release upgrades (JB, KitKat, and Lollipop)

The second gen Nexus 7 started with 4.3 Jelly Bean and then made it all the way to 6.0.1 Marshmallow (JB, Kitkat, Lollipop, Marshmallow) -- 3 gen of upgrades.

Considering this is Google's own Tensor G2 chip and the new Pixel 8 phones (which use the newer Tensor G3) will get version updates through 2030, I wonder if Google will push out this tablet's updates to match? Or perhaps the next version of this tablet will get the extended updates? That's a huge influence on my decision making. My understanding is that Android updates have been limited by how long the processor manufacturer (typically Qualcomm) was willing to support updates.
I posted the exact dates as set by Google, the link goes to the site where all Google device Android and security updates are posted once they release a device. The Pixel 8 is already listed there. It is the first Google Device to get as long of a term, while also being the only one that has the Android and Security updates expire in the same year. Best guess and hope is that it will be the device that sets the bar for their future devices, but there's no way to know until the next device is released.

Yeah, thanks for that link, was very useful. I'm just hoping this is the new standard.

Any views on what's the equivalent Samsung tab to this in terms of computing power? S7?
The Pixel Tablet is probably a moderate step up in power, but you can find a refurbished Tab S7 for much cheaper than this. You'll have 120Hz display, DeX, and pretty fantastic integration if you have a Samsung smartphone. It's not as seamless as Apple, but it's pretty damn good.

Better CPU/GPU in Pixel Tablet, and much better device security updates on the horizon while the Tab S7 is winding down on its support cycle. If the Pixel was $250 I'd probably bite. I love the concept, I just think it's overpriced for what you get. Considering I was able to snag an S7 about a year and a half ago at $175 I just can't justify steeping "up" to this when there are things that are arguably worse than what I already have.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked it out, but the reviews are not great. Others have also mentioned HiPaint is the closest thing to Procreate on an Android tablet, which again for me, further solidifies my only justification to get an iPad. There simply isn't an app on the Play Store as good as Procreate.
hilarious seeing all these android fanboys in denial. android tablet apps in general are horrible even OneNote is garbage compared to the ipad version

you're mixed up on the CPU/GPU the SD865 in the tab S7 is much much better than the crappy tensor

It definitely isn't.

https://www.androidauthority.com/...t-3219452/

You can see from these benchmarks that the G2 beats some of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC's in sustained GPU stress tests. It's not the best out there for sure, but it is a step up from the 865.

Now all that said, my S7 is incredible and I don't intend to move on from it until I see a significant performance jump. We're probably already there with the SD 8 Gen 2 chips, but I'm holding out until whatever the next iteration of Samsung's Tab series is. I expect that's when I'll make the change. I just like the concept of the Pixel Tablet. If they make a second generation version of it I expect it could be quite good though I think they might bail on the line.

I was looking for a home hub upgrade, tried this and ended up returning it.

If you are planning to use it as a home hub, you will be surprisingly disappointed. I was expecting that when it is docked, it turns into a home hub, it doesn't. Only when the screen locks, does it go into hub mode. Some items like starting a stopwatch run like it would on a tablet and stop showing up on the screen. The brightness is also way too low for me, and unlike the home hub where you can increase the brightness offset, this has no adjustment. I have nest doorbells and this does not show live feed when there's a ring.

I understand these are all software issues and they can update the product to add these features, but this product seems like a half baked item.

This is sooooo tempting - slap Home Assistant on this and find some magnets that stick to the wall with a charger attached to an outlet, and you got yourself a bonafide smart home hub that you can carry around and be like Tony Stark if you want, or I guess you could just stick it to the fridge? Either way, pretty cool

The magnet is a no-brainer and I can't believe no one has thought of it yet. I can't wait to see Apple steal this idea in 3-4 years and all of the kool-aid drinkers call it revolutionary when it hits the iPad.
This thing sucks as a home hub. It cannot even show live video when someone rings the nest doorbell.

If we're not here on slickdeals because of cost/benefit valuations, why are we here? Obviously not to make friends based on your adjective choice.
