For example:

The $1199 iPhone Prom Max is 79,900 points (plus tax if applicable) if you have the Reserve (so retail * 66.7 points). Effectively 1/3 off at a penny per point.

If you have a card with a $99 ish annual fee, I suspect you get 25% extra (so retail * 80 points). Effectively 20% off at a penny per point.

If you have a no-annual-fee card, you likely get 10% extra (so retail * 91 points). About 9% off at a penny per point.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

But what if you aren't traveling much and need a new iPhone? Not everyone is looking for a 4 cent pp redemption on a round trip business class flight to Zimbabwe. Why not buy airline gift cards when they go on sale? (Like the recent Southwest cards at Costco).

Also worth noting you get extended warranty and purchase protection when you pay with points (you don't when you pay with gift cards).
You are really better off buying apple gift cards when they have promos or Amex offers to buy Apple giftcards for 20% to 25% off and using the UR points for travel to maximize the value.
I can get an iphone 15 pro for 66,600 points ($660 cash value points)

Yes - they don't ask what carrier you're using it with.

Mine only shows a 25% bonus. Also, no Macbook Pros, which is what I am shopping for (they allowed me to use points for a Macbook Pro about two years ago).

Exactly I was looking for the new pros as well

I agree the flights are a joke. Bragging about a flight that they would never purchase. Spend points on what is meaningful to you. We all have different values. 7c or 4c a flight is meaningless to me. I fly international 2 times a year and use points for last minute short hops using ba avois on AA metal.

Exactly. They calculate these ridiculous redemption values based on first class flights with "MSRP's" of thousands of dollars that they never would have spent. If you compare the points they spent on that flight to the actual money they would have spent on the same route (using a different airline, main cabin, discounted gift cards, etc.) the redemption ratio would be WAY lower (probably even worse than this Apple deal). Sure, it's nice to lay down in a comfy chair or access a shower on an international flight, but for me that's not where I want to splurge.

And same goes for hotels. I can spend 10,000 points on a fancy hotel room that's "normally" $1,000 a night and say I'm getting a 10:1 redemption ratio. But if I could Hotwire a nice hotel room in the same location for $100 a night I'd argue the redemption ratio was more like 1:1. Obviously that's an oversimplified example and there are certainly times where redeeming your points for hotel rooms or flights makes perfect sense and gets you a better redemption ratio than this Apple deal, but all of these self-proclaimed experts telling us we are all so stupid redeeming for iPhones is getting out of control.

how many miles to Dubai?
Its not like its an easy redemption to nail. The price was less when I did it. However. There is plenty of aspirational travel you can do with Chase points. $1200 a night hotel for 35K points.Clearly redemptions for lower hotels and things as well.

True. But getting that phone is at full retail so that is another factor. Its not like you are getting a nice discount on the phne and can get Best Buy gift cards or something to buy that phone. In the miles and points community this is discussed. (your comment specifically)

To a certain extent true. You go to that hotwire hotel and Ill stay at Part Hyatt in Tokyo in a 1500 sq foot suite that goes for 2000-3500 a night. But this deal would be a deal if the retail price of the product was reduced. In this case they are giving a slightly higher point ratio which they do every yr.

this thread is hilarious. ballers on a budget using chase points lol
I have been in the miles and points community a long time. While it has changed due to social media and now there are maybe a few more younger players I can tell you the following. The people who are in the highest income brackets love miles and points. The miles and points person tends to get analytical with things. I can state that anyone with minimal time can get a free nice vacation every yr with airfare, hotels rental car if needed covered. It doesnt have to be a luxury experience all the way, or it can be. Thats the easy pick up. I know some insanely wealthy people (top 1 percenters) who love to get that free nice room and flight. So the overall demographics of some of the meetups around the country definitely skew to higher income brackets. There is truth in many of the statements. Would I pay 15K round trip for that Cathay Pacific flight in First. Once you experience it once, is all it takes. Instead of flying in misery in a metal tube balled up on the back, you are treated like a celebrity with fine china, a huge space and the flight experience becomes part of the vacation. Then you stay in a really nice hotel. Some people dont like to travel or dont want to go outside the US. Part of the reason they may not like it, is thinking about a long flight to Europe etc in coach. There are definitely strategies and it doesnt mean merely because you have points that you can easily find that trip in business class to Australia or First Class to Hawaii any time you want. So it is planning and patience, or booking a trip way out or last minute. The best part is you can cancel with zero cost or a few dollars. That makes this sort of travel more flexible than cash. If a better flight or route opens up, you can do it.

What should I do if I wanna travel to China or Korea? They don't have Asia airlines as partners?

Check United, Singapore or any other partner airlines and see if there is any deals. Also check if booking with the Ultima Rewards portal will give you a better deal. If you have the annual fee card you get more (like an extra 25%).

I have so many points on different Chase cards. Only one gave me a 25% discount but even with that, I think it would be overall cheaper to just buy stuff on sale as it seems like these prices are higher than elsewhere. Like I looked at the Ipad mini, $500 here but $400 everywhere else. I'm going to use all of my points to get a Vision Pro anyway, so I'm saving them.

Been waiting on this for weeks now!

So, yes - it's not the absolutely best maximum redemption option for points, but a 50% bonus or 1.5 cents per is good enough to justify the purchase of a product that hardly EVER goes on sale, but ONLY IF you're not tied to a postpaid carrier or need to keep your grandfathered plan.

Otherwise, taking advantage of bill credits for an iPhone is a good deal as well, as long as you can foot the bill on multiple lines. I personally have a single line that I pay $35/month for, and for me it doesn't make sense to switch to postpaid.

Second - I know people have their stories about the Chase Apple Store. Yes, it's a third party. Yes, delivery times suck if you need a phone now or have no patience. I've ordered from them before (12 Pro Max, iPad Pro) and had no issues when it came to the actual delivery, but it was indeed a long wait.

Third - for those of you wanting points + a device faster, you can "pay yourself back" and get the statement credit, then use that credit to purchase your device from a retailer at full price.

I did this with my 14 Pro Max - at the time it was a 50% bonus, but now it's a 25% and only on select categories. But I got $1200 on statement credits for 80K points, and went to the Apple Store to buy my iPhone.

Sorry to be stupid but how do you "pay yourself back" at 1.5x? Is that a separate promotion or can I do that now with the Ipad I bought last week?

When they have Lowes Amex offer of Spend $200 get $50 back just recently. Buy Apple gift cards at Lowes and get 25% off. Simple as that.

Nonsense. Those Lowes offers are rare and when they come about you can buy any gift card you could possibly want (Visa, Amazon, Gasoline, etc.). Wasting that deal for a discount on an Apple Gift Card is not a fair comparison to this deal. A points expert like yourself should know better than that.

Also worth noting again that even if you were able to buy enough discounted Apple gift cards to buy your iPhone, you would be foregoing the credit card benefits such as extended warranty and purchase protection (which are valid if you buy with points).
