My experience with Norton over the years has dramatically worsened, it's now pop-up-fest and ad-town despite clicking everything there had to be clicked and toggled to make these pop-ups and ads disappear.
I had to stop using Norton. They spam you constantly trying to upsell other products. It's basically add ware now.

Sorry guys forgot to mention too.. though it's worth bearing in mind that at first this just cuts down on the number of pop ups it doesn't eliminate them completely ... next to "device security" there's a "performance" thing you can click on from the drop down menu, from there you can click on "settings", "administrative settings", and slide "special offer notification" to "off"
You'll still get pop ups trying to sell you stuff but not as much and if you look for the "don't show me this again" option upper right hand corner I had to do this a few times repeatedly for the same ad but.. now that I think about it the only pop up I keep seeing is the Norton Genie when I exit out of Norton after launching it.. other than that no pop ups for months.
As others answered, Norton is not a resource hog these days.
I used to use Defender ta one point (after having used Norton, McAfee and others), but now Norton360 Premium has features which Defender does not.
E.g. Auto VPN is great for automatically securing wifi connections (not that I recommend using unsecure wifi networks, but at times a phone automatically conects to wifi or in a pinch it can come in handy for emergency situations). My phone at times connects to my ISP's wifi network (even when I made sure to "forget" the network) and there are risks with trusting a wifi network based solely on the SSID being your ISP name (the wifi network claims to be from your ISP, but not sure how that can actually even be verified by the end user...)
Norton also includes Darkweb monitoring and alerts and 75GB of cloud storage.
Lastly, Norton includes Webcam hijacking protection, which Defender does not.
Quote: "Having failed detection during my quick test, I moved on to perform a full system scan with Norton and Microsoft Defender, leaving the virus samples in the same location to see if they'd be picked up.
Norton performed remarkably, detecting and blocking every virus sample as it did during the real-time detection test.
Interestingly though, Microsoft Defender only detected and blocked the first EICAR sample and allowed all other samples, including the live viruses. This is strange considering Microsoft Defender successfully blocked every EICAR and live sample during real-time detection.
AV-Comparatives provides real-world security tests to produce benchmarks for the products being tested.
I checked their Real-World Protection Test for July-October 2021 report to understand how Norton and Microsoft Defender performed on a broader scale. The real-world protection test is based on 743 test cases (such as malicious URLs), tested from the beginning of July 2021 till the end of October 2021.
Norton blocked 743 threats and achieved a protection rating of 100%, while Microsoft Defender blocked 741 threats to achieve a 99.7% protection rate.
I also checked the AV-Comparatives March 2021 Malware Protection Test report to see how the two providers performed.
The test consisted of 10013 samples collected in March 2021, of which Norton achieved a 100% detection rate blocking all 10013 samples. Microsoft Defender didn't perform as well, achieving a 99.85% as it only detected 9998 of the samples."
