Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

If done thru the Warp system correctly you literally don't have to do anything. Pop the SIM in and the phone is activated.

I only accessed my Straight Talk account with the email I gave the guy to keep tabs on the situation but I didn't even need to do that.
true as I was in/out of WM in 15-20 minutes. She printed out the activation code, highlighted it, and said the phone is active and all without taking it out of the box. Sure enough, all working fine.

metro is not a contract its prepaid also and there phone unlocks in 180 days even if only pay for first month. They give port in discounts on higher end phones. while ST gives nothing for porting in.

I got one today from Walmart store. The rep didn't ask for email /SSN. He scanned the device and charged $96.88 ($49 device+ $35 monthly plan + $12.88 tax). Came home and activated it and sent UNLOCK to 611611 twice. It will be unlocked on 01-17-2024.
1. Am I missing anything for not registering with straight talk with my email address.
2. I don't have to recharge once this first month is over, right?

It shouldn't be a problem as long as the phone is active and you don't have any issues. I would recommend that people generally try to give their email address (a secondary / junk one is fine) so that they can log in to the account if they want to, as it gives them easier access to check on the account and status if anything weird comes up.

And no, you don't need to recharge the plan after the first month.

Calling the number asks for pin but if you put included sim in phone & reboot it should automatically activate & assign your number. Purchased from WM this afternoon & activated an hour ago without calling ST.

Can someone confirm that the phones bought in store will unlock in 61 days even if left unopened and SIM not inserted, as long as the plan was activated on that SIM? Thought I read that but 4000 posts later it's all a blur. Thanks.

I read that too, but I don't know if I'm willing to take the chance

If I purchase the phone and the plan from Walmart, do they automatically choose auto-refill? Or is it only a thing if you buy the phone online?

Are you saying that I can buy the iPhone 12 from your second link for $99 by porting in a number and then buy the cheapest plan ($30) for it for just one month and then the phone will be unlocked in 180 days?

In the in store ad, the fine print states "Service Plan purchased by current subscribers will be added to account and refilled when existing service days end." Does that mean it will auto-refill and charge the credit card that you use to check out the phone?

Obviously, there are no guarantees with things like that, but I have unlocked several phones with them that way in the past. I also have two going like that right now and the lines show as active on the website, the correct IMEI numbers show as registered under the device info and the plan timer is counting down as expected, so I suspect that all should be good with these also.
