Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

FWIW, I was a day 1 buyer with no associated plan who was in Pending Purgatory this whole time. Today they refunded my credit card with zero notice of the order being cancelled. I never called anyone about the issue, they just did it on their own.

There are stores that don't have activation software? I thought all Walmarts are the same since they're all corporate owned.
The cellular services are essentially run through a third-party to help with a more full-service approach, but it seems to be based on traffic and / or demand in each particular store / area. The WARP system is run on a separate computer station that handles those direct activations, etc but it's probably not worthwhile to have a dedicated station like that in every store. And the stores that do have them don't always have someone manning them. A number of them tend to stick to high-traffic times and the hours can be pretty sporadic.

The Wal-Mart I went to today had a ton of the Straight Talk iPhone SE phones in stock but they said their particular store doesn't do phone activations in store, so they won't honor the $49 promo (since technically you have to activate the phone in store according to the terms of the promo). Has anyone run into this situation before? Can individual stores just choose not to activate phones?
Noticed a non supercenter store had it in stock the whole day (they didn't do phone activation), the same period the other supercenter store didn't. They are on the same long road and at 4pm I checked the in stock status swapped. The next day I bought 2 Big Grin

Paypal doesn't do chargebacks. They offer Purchase Protection, which is different, even though ultimately you get your money back if you can prove the goods/service purchased wasn't delivered. I don't think Paypal penalizes the seller for each individual event. IIRC there is no fee, but too many incidents could lead to the seller being banned, so ST didn't pay anything and you didn't hurt them at all.

Really? Paypal Dispute Fee is $15, but if your seller account has more than 100 transactions and a dispute rate greater than 1.5% over the past three months, you will be charged the $30 High Volume Dispute Fee instead.

ST most certainly have dispute rate more than 1.5%, so $30 for them. They probably lost more money than actually ship the phone.

Interesting. I wonder if the outside reps are allowed to shift stock around between stores if they know they're going to be working at another location with no phones or something.

I think more of electronics folks get bored by being asked "do you have $49 deal here" too many times and said "f it"

Yeah, I think the Walmart electronics guys are probably more annoyed with it than anything. However, the T-ROC reps who actually do the phone activations often seem to be cool with selling the phones when they have them. I think they likely get credit toward some kind of activation quota or commission or something (although it seems that some may try to stray into to upselling to bigger plans / devices). The ones that I've caught have seemed pretty straightforward though and perfectly happy to do the deal.

By the way guys … if you haven't had luck catching the outside reps during the week, you may want to try during the weekend around moderately high traffic hours (maybe late afternoon / early evening or so). Those guys seem to be there when crowds are more likely to be around. They're the guys that most people usually try to avoid making eye contact with most of the time because you know they're going to try to sell you a phone plan.

Went to my local Wal-mart today (Belton, TX), and asked if the $50 iPhone SE deal was available. The rep immediately invited me over to the counter, swiftly activated two phones for me. I was in and out within 15 minutes or so.

Yes, but you need to make sure that your specific phone IMEI shows as registered on their website and that your plan / line shows as active in order to get the unlock. I've unlocked several phones like that, but obviously you're removing some of the failsafes which could alert you to a problem when doing it that way.
I activated the phone using the voice prompt, but it does not show in my account that I used to buy it with. How can I check that it shows as active? When I try to "login" using the IMEI, the prompt says it texted me a code, but I haven't and don't want to open the phone.

Hmm … not sure about that one. It sounds like it may be recognizing the phone as already active and wanting to verify security with it first. I have always tried to do the activation directly from the website while logged into my account (for online orders). Here's something that you may want to try … go to your existing ST account, Manage Lines, then Add A Line. See if you can add the line from there (that's not attempting to re-activate it but rather just associate it with your account. If you have any other phone (even an inactive one) associated with your account, it will likely try to verify your security by sending a code to that, but it may not require sending a code to the new phone as long as it's not yet associated with any account. (Again, I'm assuming that this was an online order and not a Walmart purchase).

I was told they get more commission for post-paid than prepaid, but of course they're happy getting any sale. Not sure about the regular reps but the manager definitely has a quota. The one here has been rotating through the stores without reps, but instead of working the posted hours he just sells his quota and leaves early. The WM electronics people have the T-ROC manager's number. If you ask VERY nicely they can contact them and ask which store has a rep working.

Could I port the number out before the month is up? Or will that mess with the unlock?

When I try that it says

It would just say "Security Verification

Did you ever get this sorted? I am in the same boat.
