Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

No need to unlock for trades. In September, I stopped at Walmart to buy one of these for $149 while on my way to T Mobile to trade in. The T Mobile rep was the one who unboxed it.
That isnt what CSR told me.I was on phone for 2 1/2 hours trying to get 4 lines for $100 deal.

Was able to get one from Walmart for the $84 price (phone + plan). I went to a Walmart in Secaucus 4 times. The first time the rep told me to come back in the morning, in hindsight I think it was just because he was busy and didn't want to serve me. The second and third times the cell phone people (contracted out to OSC) didn't show up to work. The store manager was upset about this but he said he couldn't do anything since they needed to activate the phone for the promo. The 4th time I went the employee said they didn't have any and to come back in the morning. The manager the day before already said they had a lot, so I told the rep I had been there 3 times and keep getting told to come tomorrow. He then magically found 1 iPhone SE and sold it to me. OSC is a joke. Walmart should work with someone else.
These OSC people are shady. The one at the Walmart I went to initially also said the SEs were sold out but a regular Walmart associate told me earlier there were plenty in stock so I told the OSC guy that and he magically found one in the drawer. He also refused to sell more than one. It's like these OSC guys are incentivized to sell as few of these SEs as possible.

They're wrong. Are you coming as a new customer to get the Essentials deal? Head over to the TMO reddit. You'll learn a lot more there in 2 1/2 hrs than talking to Care.

Are you already on Essentials? There's a BOGO for adding lines that Essentials can't get but might end up being better deal for you. Regardless, T Mobile does not require traded in phones to be unlocked, especially these prepaid ones. I've gotten credits for those September ones for the last 2 billing cycles.

I wonder if stock will get re-upped before Black Friday as most of the stores I went to were sold out already.

Picked up two of these today for our boys for Christmas. Thanks for the deal, SeriousIdea249!

Called two local stores and was directed to another, further store. The woman there knew exactly what she was doing and activated them right there.

Hate to break the seals to send the unlock texts... is there any other way to get that timer started?

Not to trade in. No unlocking, no activation. The TMO rep can even enter the IMEI on the sticker to make sure the system takes it before breaking the seal on the box. But then they'll want to take it out to power on, confirm the IMEI, and check its condition.

You should be good to go with starting the 60 day clock to unlock as long as you have activated the devices. Go into online account and confirm activation was successful.

I have had luck with unlocking sealed ones in the past and have seen others who have done the same, but it is an added risk that removes some of the failsafes that might alert you to a problem. Someone who did it that way posted earlier and said they haven't seen their unlock yet. We haven't seen any further details to see where the problem is yet though.

If you try that route, log into your account and make sure that the line shows as "active", the plan timer is counting down your days and that your IMEI shows up under "device"

How do I login to their website to check that? It asks for a password. The paper that I got from the walmart rep shows the e-mail addresses I used and a pin number.
