Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

On the 18th of September. I did submit an unlock request via tfw site. So they said by Wednesday, I'll hear about the unlock request.
Cool … let us know what happens. Also, did you possibly use the SIM card in another phone? I've heard that can possibly mess up the auto unlock.

Not sure if it's the same method as the TW phones, but I believe those used IMEI as the account # and you could confirm the last four digits by texting FOUR to 611611. Then you could request a PIN by texting NTP to 611611. (Reply may take a few minutes.)
Thank you for the explanation.

Yeah, it sounds like the activation may not have been done properly. Several others have reported similar issues with not being set up right also. Here are a few screenshots of what my account pages look like for one that I purchased last week. I didn't do anything other than log in to the account using the forgot password method.
Mine was different. Will boot up the phone tomorrow.

As of 5 minutes ago, both the Straight Talk website and the WM site are offering this phone at $49 with activation. Both sites say the deal is good thru 11/26. You may want to visit the sites and take screenshots before you go to WM.

Sounds like your WM store is just trying to avoid honoring the deal. It's also possible that WM corporate screwed up in their internal communications to their field managers.

At my local store, they took down the $49 sign earlier this week and put up the $99 sign. However, I was there on Friday to get two more phones and they had put the $49 sign backup up.
Straight Talk website is showing $99 with activation for me.

Don't look at the "Phones and Devices" page. The special is posted right on the front page. It should literally be the first thing you see when the site loads.

There should also be a large black button with white text saying "FIND A STORE"

Not sure if I'm understanding your question, but yes this phone should work in Asia after it's been unlocked. You will need to purchase service in whatever country you're going to. Prepaid SIMs in Asia are pretty inexpensive (based on my limited experience in Malaysia). You can also purchase eSIMs online if you want service from the moment you hit the ground.

However, I doubt it will work while using the ST account. I don't think any US prepaid services offer free overseas roaming. I think that's only on postpaid plans, and often with extra fees.
Got it. Many thanks!

Anyone found a way to find walmart inventory for these phones without driving there? The electronic department never picks up and I don't know if brickseek or walmart inventory are accurate.

Seems risky. I would hate to gift it or flip it and have the person not be able to use service. I would like to verify the phone is physically unlocked before transferring it to someone else. I guess you can use sickw.com

Haha! People buying 10-15 of them likely aren't for gifts. Hoarding them is making it harder for someone who just wants one for themselves. Is this phone really worth flipping? If it's for a gift, I'm sure they won't mind if it's been opened for activation.

I read the wiki, got to WM and buying 2 phones.
1st Phone the mobile agent got everything right. Activated when I got home, login ok.
2nd phone (had to use different email address). Agent scanned the long barcode from Barcode 2, which start with 840, instead of the IMEI starting with 3515. Login online it shows zero line activated, inserted sim card shows SOS only. I have to drag myself to WM at lunch today to have them correct it Frown.
Folks, please insert your sim at WM, make sure your line is active before you leave.
