Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

Didn't realize I was refunded for my order on 11/17. I had chatted with CS and they said they could not cancel and advised chargeback. Went to chargeback and no need, refund present.

$149 + tax for a brand new current generation iPhone isn't bad.
I'm also considering just buying from the website because the only Walmart near me that has WARP is refusing to sell them for $49. Apparently they outsourced their phone activation to a company called OSC and those are the people who are refusing to sell the phones. Since they don't work for Walmart, even the store manager can't make them do anything.

Where is doing the best trade in values for these? I think T-Mobile but I have an 8+ person Simple Choice plan that is SUPER hard to give up (which is a requirement for the Tmo deal)

Yeah, activating the phone on your TF account shouldn't be a problem. You'll lose the ST plan, but that's pretty much a throwaway for most people anyway. Just make sure that you use the SIM that came with the phone when you activate it so that you get the unlock. You should be able to just walk through the activation process as if it were a TF phone (use the "Activate / New Tracfone" option if you do it from the website). Some users have needed to call, but it seems to depend on the luck of the draw.
I was able to activate via esim on my TF plan, hopefully saving the ST sim/plan for use in a different device later. I won't know until mid-Jan if the phone unlocks or not. Texting Unlock says "good news you're device is already unlocked" which isn't reassuring, but I am still hopeful it works out, possibly with a call to the TF unlock dept when the time comes. I've seen several posts at HowardForums with the same unlock messaging, but the device still auto unlocked. Fingers crossed!

Tmobile people told me it had to be unlocked. Thanks.
There is always room for confusion on this term. Speaking about "locked" phones can mean two different things, and so it creates confusion.

First there is a "carrier lock". That means the phone can only be used with a certain carrier for some period of time. That "lock" seldom, if ever, matters on a trade-in., yet some just refer to it as a "lock" without qualifying it.

The other "lock" is with Apple phone which can exist is a "activation lock", which is imposed when a phone is lost or stolen, for one example. That is the kind of lock is the one that prevents acceptance at trade-in, in my research on this. Most mobile phone employees don't understand the difference between the two, and just say "we don't accept locked phones for trade-in".

I had to escalate three levels with the Google Store support to get that clarified, last year. Most of the staff didn't understand this, and were giving out wrong answers to customers.

It says that because you activated using a current unlocked TF phone number/plan, mine (using psim) have done the same & did unlock as expected.
The physical sim included with phone is linked to IMEI of phone it comes with in the system & likely will only activate plan in that phone.

So you're saying you went to the store, asked for the iPhone SE 3rd Gen for StraightTalk and a $35 StraightTalk plan and they rang it up and it came out to $150 + $35 for the plan + tax? If not, don't worry about what they say they will sell the phone for, just ask for the phone and the plan and have them activate it. If the register comes out to something other than $50 + $35 + tax, walk out but it shouldn't since all of them use the same POS and the deal is until the 26th.

You just cannot expect a Walmart employee or contractor to know or care about things like this. Some do (like the T-Roc rep who did my phone), but you cannot expect it. Just ask them to do a thing they are trained to do (activate and sell you a phone) and if it isn't right. Say, "Thanks but it looks like the store system isn't working properly to give the advertised deal," and walk out.

Ahh ok. Thanks for confirming (again!). Even if I have to use the ST pSIM in the paired iPhone that should be fine. Once unlocked I can do a BYOD back to my original TF and then use the iPhone with the ST sim for a month. I may try activating with a different IMEI for the heck of it. If it works, I'll report back.

Nah I brought one two months ago for an X-MAS. So I don't know if there's an way to unlock them without opening them up. TF is claiming its unlocked. But sickw said it still locked.

Edit: 20mins later, it showing as unlocked on sickw. Thanks Smilie I should've waited and I could've gotten it for $50. But $150 still isn't bad for an current gen iPhone.

Yeah, the warranty date won't show up properly on sickw (or Apple checkcoverage) until the phone has been physically activated. With phones that I've done the past that warranty date then used to show as a full year from the date the phone was physically opened and activated (at least that's what Apple checkcoverage would show). However, it does appear that it may be updating to show a year from actual purchase date now. If you decide to open it and activate, let us know whether it tracks to purchase or physical activation date.

Your call on whether to wait or not . You never know when things can change. But the sickw warranty date was always off for me before physical activation and still got the unlock.
Sickw shows it unlocked now. So I'm happy! I don't have to open the box now Smilie

This is exactly what happened to me. They had 6 in stock. They only had 1 $35 plan left so I had them ring up one $35 and one $45. Register showed around $400 after taxes and they told me that their store is not participating in the promotion.

You were at a store that didn't have the WARP terminal. It's been discussed many many times in this thread and in the wiki.

Yeah, it sounds like you were grabbing the physical cardboard plan cards. It requires phone activation in the WARP system, as hodaddy mentioned. It doesn't automatically ring up the discount with a phone and physical plan card, even at stores with the WARP system. The phone has to be activated in the WARP system to trigger the discount, so there's no physical plan card used (although they can print out the plan PIN for reference).
