Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

Just to clarify for other readers, this is regarding a mail purchase of the phones from ST, not Walmart. There were a couple of threads, but just figured I'd mention it since this thread mentioned Walmart, which didn't give the delayed activation option. Not trying to nitpick … I just figure there would be some WM buyers asking how you delayed activating. Smilie

Also for the activation, my personal experience with these phones has been that the warranty start date tracks with the Apple-activation part of the phone, not the cell service activation. I activated a couple of these phones both ways back in November (service and physical device) and the warranties on those show as good through Nov 2024. However on a couple of other phones, I activated the ST lines when purchased in Nov (service expired last month) but I left the phones sealed in box and never opened them or touched them in any way until they recently unlocked. I just opened and activated (the device, not service) two of those phones last week and they both show warranty coverage through Jan 2025 based on Apple's "CheckCoverage" website. When you say that you "turned the phone on", did you just turn it on and then shut it back off or actually run through the phone setup to get to the point of using it as a Wi-Fi device? Because I believe that getting to the part where it says "activating device" during setup may be the key step where it communicates with Apple's servers and considers the device active, updates warranty info, etc. If you just turned it on and then back off before getting to that point, I don't think that would count from Apple's activation perspective.

As for the port out, others have reported doing that in the past without affecting the unlock, but it could be a source of complication of there are any issues. (In other words, I suspect that it should not cause a problem, but it's not really the recommended way.)
Based on my memory, I ported out one line before it expired and my iPhone didn't unlock after 60 days, I had to call tracfone to get it unlocked manually

No need for a second month of service. One is fine.

Yeah, there can always be issues here and there. I've seen at least a couple of people report getting auto unlocks in previous threads even after porting the number out, but YMMV. Some people definitely discourage any atypical changes before the unlock, as complications can arise.

Yep … most automatically unlock on day 59 or 60, although it's sometimes a few days later based on a bunch of reports from previous threads. I've also had a few from this deal unlock with no issues so far.

BTW, you can also manually "trigger" a unlock ticket from the website.

Basically after you input the imei on https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/, it will ask you a phone number, you just fill in the "expired" phone number (you can get it from the phone settings), and then it will say it's processing "unlock" and it should be done in 2 business days.

Thanks for the clarification, I had forgotten that this thread was originally for the deal from Walmart (which I was unable to score). I hope I didn't confuse anyone!

Your experience with the warranty start date corresponding to the Apple activation rather than the wireless plan activation is also consistent with what I observed with my first ST phone which I had powered on last November but had not gone through the process of activating and setting it up. Last night I activated the phone and saw that the warranty was good until Jan 2025, this was prior to activating the ST plan.

Thanks for the heads-up that I may encounter issues with the device unlock after porting the number away from ST. As my device unlock date is in March and we won't be doing any international travel until the summer, that should hopefully give us enough time to resolve any unlocking issues that may arise.

One last thing - I finally got around to porting my other line to my second ST plan. While the port for my first plan last night completed instantaneously, this time the port was stuck in pending status for several hours. I had done the plan activation and port through the ST website, the same way that I had done last night, and also used the same ST account (email). But this time it had "remembered" my port-in info, and I had clicked the "view and edit" button as I wanted to double check that the account number and transfer PIN was correct but even after clicking the button this information was still masked out. I went ahead and submitted the form without changing anything. I suspect that clicking the "view and edit" button is what messed things up - looking back I should've re-entered my account and transfer PIN. After waiting a but and seeing that the port had not gone through, I logged into my ST account and could see that the second line was showing as inactive and there was the option to activate a device, so I clicked it and went through the process again, and again it had "remembered" my port-in info. But after submitting this time, the port was still in pending status. Going back to the plans page to look at the line, this time there was no longer the option to activate a device on the line. Thinking that something was wrong, I called into ST support. After explaining the issue, they originally wanted me to wait a bit but I explained that I thought I had entered the porting info incorrectly and then they were happy to transfer me to the porting team. I was on hold for about 10 minutes (even though the estimated wait was 30+ minutes). The porting guy took a look and he mentioned something about having received the porting request from the billing department, but the port info was missing? Anyways, I gave him the info and he submitted it manually and the port finished in about 2 minutes. Whew, what a relief that was as today was the last day of my billing cycle with my previous carrier.

Unlocks on day 61 to 63 are pretty common and some have come through as late as day 65. You connected to Wi-Fi before / after the reboot right? If you text UNLOCK to 611611 does it say your phone is already unlocked? (The SIM needs to be in, but you don't need active service to text 611611).

When you are stuck at unlocking, you can always try this:

1. go sickw.com to check if it's actually unlocked or not, if it's showed as unlocked on sickw.com, then that means it's unlocked actually.
2. If sickw.com showed it's locked, then you can go tfwunlockpolicy.com to check if it's eligible to unlock. If it's is, you can trigger unlock process manually there. If it's not, double check if 60 days passed, if it passed, then you have to call tracfone to ask why.

Nothing wrong … some unlocks come through a few days late and that might be all it is. You could try checking their online unlock portal to see if it says eligible or giving them a call, but there have also been a lot of people who got the unlock, just a few days later than expected.
