Regardless if you decide to buy this particular unit or not, one KEY specification you should locate prior to purchase with any home "A/V type" Receiver:

God damnit. I got burned hard by a bad HDMI board from Onkyo years ago. It was a giant recall that the old heads in here will remember. But for this price I'm thinking of rolling the dice again. SMH I'll never learn.

It really depends on several factors, some of the primaries for me are: 1) how efficient are the speakers it will be driving and 2) how big of a room will it be trying to fill with sound. In a small to medium sized room with 90dB or higher speakers this unit would probably do fairly well, other than that, I certainly would be looking for more power for "all channels driven".

This information indicates "at it's best" this amplifier will drive 1 channel at 200 watts at 10% total harmonic distortion (which is enough distortion to be pretty easily heard), and 2 channels at 90 watts (maximum).

I agree, this always gets exaggerated and blown out of proportion.

I would add how well your speakers are implemented, room environment & your preferred listening levels.

Let's not forget something people often bring up, just let your sub handle all the bass.

I got this open box from a big seller on eBay for $250. For the price, it can't be beat.

It does have some quirks:

1. The calibration doesn't detect speaker distances properly (sets them close to 0 when they are 10 feet away). You have to mount the mic to a proper tripod or it will sometimes not even detect a particular speaker.

2. The AutoEQ doesn't seem to do much based on using a UMIQ-1 and REW to compare before and after. It does very minimal adjustments.

3. For me, the receiver adds around 150ms in latency when using any bitstream audio (even when I set lipsync delay to 0ms). This happens even with Auto Lipsync setting off. Not sure if it's an issue in the latest firmware or something else. Pure PCM audio has only maybe 30-40ms latency which is great.

On the plus side, the HDMI 2.1 ports (3 of 6 are HDMI 2.1, 40Gbps) are quite reliable and sound quality is solid.

I had a NR709 that succumbed to the HDMI issue however I think those are long in the past. I've had this since receiver since last BF and no major issues. The current control app is much better but still not great. Occasionally needs a hard unplug when it loses internet connection (have it on a smart plug). This replaced a Pioneer VSX-90 and subjectively sounds light years better. Looking for speakers to try out the Atmos capabilities.
