When comparing the Sony to almost any other player, it's as good or better than them. I'm going to pick another one up for our bedroom at this price.
I own both this player and the Panasonic 820. The entry level Panasonic is probably the only other one worth considering against this Sony.

How does this one compare to the Panasonic one on FP that's almost 3x this price MSRP?

It's a solid player. It's usually the one people recommend before jumping to the Panasonic that you mentioned (820). The cons of the Sony are that it can freeze mid movie and you have to manually turn on Dolby Vision when a disc has it. Sometimes it's hard to know which discs do and don't. The Panasonic also does up converting and color rendering better than the Sony (significantly in some people's eyes).

As much as I am a fan of Panasonic players I'm not sure I would say it's significantly better.
The biggest drawback with Sony was the known issues but some have posted settings you can change that resolves them apparently.
The manual switching on/off for DV is a nuisance but for some find they can live with it for the price difference.
TBH the Optimizer does so well the 420 may be good enough for the price difference also.

I decided on this player as it supports the Vudu app unlike the LG I was also looking at. I have a 3d tv and a couple 3d titles on Vudu so I hope this does the trick! I also hope it does well at video playback over USB, but I have a few ways to get that done if it doesn't work out. My Vudu app on my PS3 does 3d, but only at 720p.

I saw a review with the same complaint about DVD upscaling. Does it not look better than regular 480p? I have a TV from the short overlap of 3d TV and 4k tv from 2016. I'm still waiting for my used UHD player to ship. It's also pretty cool that it can play super audio CDs. Only my launch PS3 can play those. Now I just need to find a SACD.
