I was looking for other options to get the Panasonic Player 4k BluRay player DP-UB820-K for $347.99 as I missed out on the previous deal. (The price has been hovering previously around $400.) I found it popped up again, but now with multiple retailers too. All with free shipping.

Amazon (shipped and sold): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...PDKIKX0DER
Amazon (shipped and sold by Abt Electronics): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...DZGDB0J87N
Abt Electronics (directly): https://www.abt.com/Panasonic-4K-...26898.html
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

You're comparing a game console to a dedicated 4K Blu-Ray player. The UB820 has the HDR Optimizer and a better processor. Moreover, you get Dolby Vision with it. Don't get me wrong, the PS5 is great for most people. But a lot of 4K Blu-Ray collectors are enthusiasts and want the absolute best picture quality they can get. That's where the UB820 comes in.

Received mine tonight with an outer box. The first 4k disk I put in is Minions: The Rise of Gru. at the beginning it just showed UNIVERSAL loading LOGO, then I upgraded the firmware to 1.76 (latest) and it won't play anymore. Does anyone have the same disk and the same player?

Btw, I tried a couple of other 4k disks, working fine except the loading time is longer than my SONY X800. the picture quality is way better than SONY, not to mention my SONY X800 does not support DV.

Ordered from ABT for the first time since I got that extra promo code but my ub820 went from "back ordered" to "future". Anyone have any experience with this or a rough timeline when I can expect this to finally ship out?

Well shoot. If they were going to let more people buy than they had stock, I wish they would have left the sale open for 24 hours and just back ordered them like Amazon does sometimes.

For those that own this, does the HDR Optimizer have a calibration system of some sort that tells it what your TV is capable of?

My understanding is it reads what your display is capable of(ie brightness) then tone maps/ processes the HDR content to the display based on those abilities.

It even scales down HDR content for those displays that aren't as capable.
Extremely helpful for Projectors!

There is a display setting that helps with pinpointing this.
Definitely need to set that before using it.

HDR needs to be tone mapped for us to view it.
There is no set standard, this is what separates players and why Panasonic is highly regarded with this.

I don't think the displays have a way of reporting their brightness. If they do however, I sure would like a PC app that would read that information.

It has been in stock, just at the higher normal price. It is marked down again now ($2 higher than last time) because they are price matching Best Buy this time around. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/pana...Id=6278202

My order was placed 11/13 and the status is currently "future." Does that just mean back ordered?

That is odd. Possibly lens dirty? Also look to see if there is a software update if possible.
Quote from Alucard400 :
I say open the player up so you can see the laser disc head reader. blow some compressed air on it. but maybe the read head no longer moves up/down on the track. This would prevent the read head from going to the beginning of the disc.
Cleaned the lens with isopropyl alcohol/compressed air, and it's on the latest firmware, but still no dice. I checked the track, too, and it's super smooth, so it looks like the reader is just gone. Frown Surprisingly, Blu-Rays still work, just not 4K UHD discs, and my experience exactly mirrors another anecdote I found on the internet: https://www.reddit.com/r/homethea...ray_works/

Glad I pulled the trigger on this deal, here's to hoping the new player lasts longer, especially with that extended warranty.
