FYI - this is a great player and is definitely a step above the 4k Blu-Ray playback on the Xbox Series X and PS5. The Dolby Vision and general picture & sound quality are noticeably better on an LG OLED.

But worth it for some.... especially those that pay more for OLED.

I WANT THIS SO BAD! Thank You OP, now to decide. Over 2800 Blu-Rays including UHD so this makes absolute sense. I have been using PS5 and Series X for playback!

Bought this a year and a half ago since I love Panasonic and wanted a standalone player. It's stunning! If you want a great BD player with all the extras and you have an OLED - this is the player for you. If you don't have an OLED but do have a PS5/XBOX, you really don't need this.

This is geared more towards users that want the best picture quality they can get.

Would i see a noticeable difference (audio and picture quality) with the panasonic vs the LG UBK90 i have? I have it hooked up to an LG 65CX and 5.2.4 system

Yes it would, how much difference and is it worth $400 will every for each person.

If you didn't already have a player and you wanted the best performance from all disc content this would be the best choice.

If cost is big priority you might want to consider their 420 player, it's pretty much the same performance minus DV.

The 420 has gone down to $130 in the past but that has been awhile. It gets to $150 more often, well worth it at that price IMO.

I have a very similar setup (65" LG CX, LG UBK90, 5.2.2), and I'm interested in upgrading the disc player. What I've gleaned from my time reading/watching reviews is the HDR optimizer on the Panasonic players (UB420, UB820, UB9000) is top notch. That said, the feature is only in use for HDR10 (ie it has no effect on DV titles), and it's not clear to me how much of an upgrade it would be over the UBK90 on an OLED (as opposed to a display with a more restrictive dynamic range like a projector). In terms of audio, the UB820 provides pre-outs for 7 channels--which is a nice feature--but you have 9 channels. Also, I would be surprised if the audio processing on the disc player is better than that of your AVR.
The conclusion I've reached for myself in regards to switching to the UB820 from the UBK90 is that it would be an overall upgrade (better build quality, improved HDR10 tone mapping, HDR10+ capable if I happen to have a compatible display in the future, and certainly a better option for projectors), but it would likely be a marginal improvement for my specific use case. However, I could be convinced otherwise if it's shown that the HDR10 processing is significantly better. If you decide to go for the upgrade, I'd be very interested to hear about your experience and first-hand comparison between the two disc players.

The HDR optimizer works great. I've had this player for two years. Whats not talked about enough is the 4K upscaling. So I've got an Espon 5050 Projector and a 120in screen. Its very hard to tell the difference between UHD and HD upscaled to 4K. Don't even think about using this for streaming as the Menus are slow and dated. I've also got and OLED and its great with that also. Last night I was Eternals UHD and it appeared too dark. The optimizer can adjust the brightness without blowing out the picture if that makes sense.

I bought a Panasonic 4K Blu Ray Player with HDR10+ for $90 shipped from Best Buy about 14 months ago. My ~ 5 month old 4K TV doesn't have Dolby, so I don't care about that aspect. It was described as "open box", but when I opened the box up, it looked entirely brand new. We have been very happy with it, since now I can do interlibrary loan requests for certain movies on Blu-Ray, and I've also built up a nice little collection of movies on 4K Blu Ray. My favorite is The Shawshank Redemption.

I think the 420 and the 820 are a game changer with the optimizer for HDR 10 content. I have a Samsung QN90 tv and a UB420, and I set the optimizer to bright TV setting and for some movies that are mastered at 2k/4k nits, it makes a huge difference in contrast that it's literally night and day (Tenet looks phenomenal with the optimizer). I haven't A/B'd other blu ray players but I personally could not tell a huge amount of difference while not using the optimizer when I compared it to my Xbox One S. I thought that the colors were a bit better, but could be placebo really since it wasn't blind.

I see $421.17 (not $400) when I get to Amazon. Am I missing something?

Why would you buy this and not a PS5? For $99 more the PS5 is the better deal. Thats what I did.

You link now says $421.17

1) Cuz the PS5 doesn't work as well as a high-end standalone player
2) Cuz the PS5 is still hard to get.

However, if I could only get one, I would agree with you and get a PS5 first.
