1. Get one number for phone calls and texts ONLY. You are known to others (friends, banks, insurance companies...) by that number. Use a very cheap plan that has little to no data for it.
2. Get another number for data ONLY. Switch to the cheapest you can find every a few months. You are always a new user because you don't need to port in your number for it.

With two SIMs active in one phone, you can use one for calls/texts, and the other for data.

If I got one of these, could I just pop it into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and use it for data that way? I have an old Franklin T9 hotspot and I'd kind of like to try setting it up as a hotspot in my car for an iPad that I use for music and some internet stuff. I can use my phone hotspot, but that ends up disconnecting / reconnecting at times and just isn't always seamless, so I'd be interested in experimenting with having a constant hotspot going. Would that work and / or need any special hacks to get it going?

You have to speak to a live agent "voice call" to get the port out pin
They will send you a text message while you are on the phone with them to confirm that it's actually your phone line.
Account number to port out is available online, but the PIN is the one requiring the call.
