Don't purchase it. Read the fine print the utility company has the right to then adjust your settings on hot days at peak times.
it's noted in the deal text which deals with which providers require enrollment in the thermostat management program. in the vast majority of cases enrollment is not required. in many cases, if you enroll, you can get the device for free or nearly free, but if you are willing to accept a worse price ($40 for google nest in my case instead of $0 or $5 in some other providers' cases) you don't have to enroll in the energy management program. you would have to opt-in to it, they don't just suddenly take control of your thermostat without your consent. plus, even if you do enroll to get the device for cheaper, you can opt-out whenever you want. a lot of unnecessary fear in this thread.
$0 for me ended up being $15 after tax and shipping.

For me the smartphone application I use to control my Nest is called Nest. I also see an application called Home. If your Nest says you need a different application then I assume it is what you need but a quick search tells me that you do not.

Ahh.... is it called NEST Lifestyle? by nest labs.

I use Android. The following are the two applications that might be relevant. If you are using an iPhone then I hope you are able to find the equivalents.

For those not interested in connecring to the internet or Google, there are some features that may make this appealing.

A few years ago i bought a couple of Sensi smart Thermostats from the Utility website. They are set to offline. The price was still better than a comparable 7 day Honeywell and they work great.

seems like even if using a nest app you still need a google account to log in.

i DL the next app i mentioned and it has no way to create an account.

Create a new account to use the Nest app

You'll need a Google Account in order to create a new account to use with the Nest app. If you don't have one, first follow these instructions to create a Google Account. Then, follow the instructions below to create your Nest app account.

Note: If you've signed in to any Google product before (like Gmail, Maps, or YouTube), you may already have a Google Account. You can use the same username and password you created for that product to sign in to any other Google product or service, including Nest.
