PSA: Be cautious with American Express gift cards this holiday season - my frustrating experience
Sharing a post from Reddit, this should be a warning to all on AMEX gift card practices:

TLDR:
AMEX sent $500 prepaid gift card to unclaimed property and turned the plastic into valueless gift. This all happened while the gift card still had a valid expiration date.
This holiday season: DON'T BUY PREPAID GIFT CARDS. Stick with cash or something else that will hold its value when you are unsure what to buy the recipient.
