There are ways which have been used to successfully unlock AT&T phones without waiting for 60 days.

ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.

1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.

Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.

1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.

I would just look for a Note 10+ , has MicroSD, no support, but I think there are some out there for $200, I think the 10+ has 12GB of ram, less hertz but better quality image

At least 60 days of paid service with AT&T. But I have heard reports of you can request unlocking online if you have a friend try to put their SIM in the device and it shows up in their AT&T account devices.

YMMV but at least 60 days.
how much to be paid if we want to unlock it after 60 days of ATT postpaid service?

Free. You can submit a request as soon as the 60 days is done. Even if service has stopped.

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/

Also according to this text:

Quote :
Was paid in full when you bought it (it was not purchased on an installment plan). You must wait 60 days from your purchase date to submit an unlock request.
You might not need service. When I purchased my last BestBuy AT&T Pay in Full but requires activation phone... the terms said after 60 days of service. Now it says just 60 days from purchase date. So even better... might just need to wait 2 months and spend $0 extra.

Coming from an S20 FE, what do you guys recommend would be the better buy? This S22 Ultra for $499 or the S23FE for $399? Also what is the difference between "Activate today" and why is it needed for this deal?

Yes, that's mostly the case. As mentioned in the wiki, if you are be to cancel within 3 days then activation fee will be waived.
Where is this wiki that you mention? I just bought the phone today, it's coming tomorrow. According to your instructions, I need to fully set up the at&t account right? Like I need to verify my email and everything?

What about for service? I bought the cheapest monthly service plan which is $60/mo. Unfortunately, it took more than 3 days for the phone to ship so I don't expect to have my activation fee waived.

ATT. I just followed the steps from OP.
Did you have to pay for your ATT service plan for the first month? I got my phone a few days after I started service so I'm out of the 3 day window for waiving the activation fee.

So I got through the sim swap method all the way until the unlock portal. And I got the following message
Quote :
You can't unlock your device until your installment plan is paid off. If you pay off your device as part of your monthly bill, wait until the start of your next bill period to unlock it.
Want to pay off your device early? Make sure your number has been active on the device for at least 60 days. Then, sign into your account to review and pay off your installment plan. Wait 48 hours after you make your final payment to submit a new unlock request.
I just got the phone today and paid off the phone 5 hours ago. Should I wait the full 48 hours or would I be good to try again after 24 hours?

I bought my s22u from best buy yesterday, phone arrived today, and I'm already unlocked. Monday morning around 9am I bought a tello number with esim, purchased from best buy Monday at 10am using the tello number, phone arrived today while I was at work, got home around 7 and started updating (was hoping to get Android 14 with the at&t sim since it was just released for the s22u for at&t customers this week), spent about 3 hours doing every update. Then I popped the at&t sim into an unlocked phone, made one call, checked the at&t acct &saw my unlocked phone listed, so I went to the unlock request page in an incognito browser, typed in the imei, used a different name and email from my account, and I got the unlock code within minutes. Just need to cancel the service by sometime tomorrow and that's it! Super easy! There is still no billing amount showing up in my account, but for some crazy reason my account got linked to my grandfathers (not sure how, I was on his plan maybe 10 years ago) and he has a crazy balance due. I hope they don't try to loop me into that. Regardless, I am typing this on my new s22u with my visible sim card.

Edit: I think the important part is putting the at&t sim in an unlocked, paid off device. Before you tried the unlock request, did you see the unlocked device showing up in your account? It should have replaced the s22u, and it should say eligible for upgrade or something. Don't put the sim back into the s22u before you get the phone unlocked. And when you submit the unlock request make sure that you click the option "I don't have an at&t phone number" which prompts you to enter in the imei instead. Did you miss any of those?

Appreciate your walkthrough there, super helpful.

Yes, I did see the unlocked device (I have an iPhone SE) on the ATT web portal before I tried to do the unlock for the samsung phone. And it does say eligible for upgrade. I put in the IMEI and made sure to select "I don't have an AT&T phone number".

And crap, I put the ATT sim card back into the samsung. The web portal is showing the samsung phone again BUT it says it is "unlock eligible" and it links to the unlock portal. There's also "eligible for upgrade" copy as well.

Maybe I'll give until the afternoon tomorrow to try unlocking again.

From what I'm gathering, the important part is getting that s22u disassociate from the att plan. Did you try searching the unlock status today using the unlock request # and imei? I would start over honestly. Put the sim back in the unlocked phone again and get the s22u off your account then redo it. The other guy said you can try twice before getting that 24hr lock.

I would just look for a Note 10+ , has MicroSD, no support, but I think there are some out there for $200, I think the 10+ has 12GB of ram, less hertz but better quality image
Better image quality in what way? Camera or just display? Wouldn't the camera be much better on the s22? I have the Note10+ and it takes super amazing pics. I just figured s22 would be a huge upgrade. I'm thinking of going with S23 ultra this year or early next year when the s24 comes out. But if it's not a huge upgrade then I don't mind waiting. Note10+ is still quite fast.
