Hey! It depends on your usage. If you buy the thing and you love it, the 3 was better.
If you buy the thing and you use it once in a while, the 2 is better.
My opinion, get the wife the 2. Find out which you are, double back for the 3 if you need to.
Now you have two devices to play with the wife. Why play alone? Date nights some world else.
That's my plan. Get the quest 3 for my wife bc I already loved the 2. I don't get to play as much as I'd like at all as a parent of two, so if I didn't own either, I'd recommend myself a 2 first. The 3 IS MUCH NICER!!! But it's just the same paper weight if you don't play and VR has a low adoption rate. Many quest 2s stayed unused. A shame. If you want to save, used q2 are ridiculous value, can rebuy all the pieces your face touches (you should buy a cover no matter, don't want to sweat into the foam anyway).
If you have the money, get the 3.
I use my quest 2 mainly to work out. Cardio is more fun. You can even get on a stationary bike and bike through nyc. Beats just the treadmill.
I even own a Vr treadmill so I can walk in the games. You can go as deep as you like. But for newcomers, I think the quest two is still a BARGAIN for what you get. It will stay relevant for at least another three years. Q3 doesn't have many exclusives for it at all. It'll sell less than Q2 bc of price and devs will continue to support the 2.
The Quest 2 was my family's first experience with VR. We have four accounts on the headset with their own personalization, game saves, etc. It gets used a few times a week from shooters to 3D puzzles to Tetris and others.
If you jump on this deal, search for the link for a free silicone cover from Meta for the facial interface — good for keeping sweat off your quest especially for multiple users.
Also, sweeten the deal — get $30 credit in the Meta Quest store if you have a referral from an existing user.

Damn... If the quest 3 wasn't so much sharper I would just get this. Hopefully there will be something on Black Friday for the 3. Doubt it, but hoping.

Is it $250 sharper? I'm considering getting one for my wife and know nothing about them

I did this 3 years ago when the quest 2 launched at $250 price tag. The wife's has been sitting there unused for more or less since that xmas.

I agree with you 100%. Many Quest VR's are unused not because of lack of content or its performance. It is because its tough to get it and running with a busy work life. You need to set a space and time with no interruption. Its not pick up and run. You need the initial setup time and once you think that, many will go to consoles or PC to play a game,
Is the quest 2 Advanced really a thing? Is there a quest 2 and then a quest 2 advance or is someone just trying to make it sound like this is something special?
The only consumer electronic in recent times (aside from the GPU scalping scarce that saw even manufacturers like Zotac get in on the price gouging) that the manufacturer increased the price years post launch with no added benefit for the consumer.
Now it's on "sale" for the regular MSRP when it launched 3+ years ago.
I would save your money, or as others have suggested, put it towards the newer model.
The main benefit of 3 over 2 is the increased refresh rate, which theoretically should help offset the incredibly high statistic of consumers who report motion sickness within five minutes of usage.
Despite all this, and the technological growth over the past seven years of medium to high end VR being made available to consumers, don't expect either of these products to produce a crisp clear image like you've seen on ads and YouTube reaction videos. Those are screen recordings from the PC showing a mirror of what the player watching the VR would see if the tiny glass screen inside the head unit was on par with a 1440p 120hz monitor.
From my experience, having briefly owned a Quest 2 and an ill fated Samsung HMD Odyssey, the image quality is still not much better than those cheap headsets for your phone that ran rampant between 2017-2020 at your local savings store, depending on the phone of course.

For most people the Quest 2 is more than enough. You won't use it much, and when do you use it - its cool. Only people that want to use VR more than 2 times a month should fork out the price for the Quest 3.

Just use the $500 for a quest 3
