No plan required. You can activate with a tracfone $15 plan so that it can be unlocked for free after 60 days. No need to renew after the first month. May need to call them to rebrand the phone to tracfone if you want to activate on tracfone. If you already have a tracfone, ST, total service you can activate with that service for free.
Free shipping or free store pickup.
Also available directly from ST website. Skip adding a plan if you don't want one. Thanks to mitchflorida.

I noticed this week that they made changes to account password requirements without notifying customers so it seems everything is YMMV - as usual.
Called TF CS.
Went through the phone menu and chose Activation.
The automated activation process also failed and I was transferred to a live person, sounded like they were off-shore.
By now, I think these CS people are well aware of this Straight Talk phone deal and what us SDers are trying to do to activate an A54 on the TF service.
The person I spoke to did not give me a hard time, just asked me if I wanted a ST or TF account. Told the person I wanted to continue being a TF customer and they had the A54 rebranded, activated, and transferred my existing phone number over.
Now that the phone has been activated I no longer get the annoying, with a Straight Talk logo, activation reminder on the notification area.
However, the A54 when booting up still has the same prominent Tracfone Wireless logo displayed.
I sent to 611611 an UNLOCK txt message.
No response yet after several hours.
12/20 Update
------------------
No response to UNLOCK text message.
Went to the Tracfone Unlocking website.
My IMEI is not eligible for unlocking because one of several various reasons may apply.
Of course one of the reasons is that 60 days have not elapsed since activation.
Will check website again in 60 days.
I still get email messages from Straight Talk Wireless thanking me for the purchase and asking me to rate or review the phone.
I have unsubscribed/opted-out of further email communications.
