I've got an old Onkyo amp from 25 years ago sitting in a box in my basement. Has technology changed drastically over 25 years that would make it worthwhile to purchase a new amp/pre-amp?

Absolutely not. Unless there is something wrong with the amp, any distortion will be undetectable except to sensors. Try them without a separate amp, as the amp in your phone or receiver should be plenty. If you need more gain (too quiet), then buy an amp.

Before burning your money on "audiophile" equipment, try finding better source material. In order of importance: source>speakers>amp>cable.

i have the ath m50xbt, quiet comforts 4s, moondrop arias. How does this compare to them? I also dont have any amp/dac so any recommended ones for this? Also any other open ended headphones on sale rn that are better?
