First of all, you don't pay full price for a phone.. Prepaid carriers such as Redpocket, Visible etc have discounts of up to $300- $400 for Blackfriday or similar days.
Then, you switch carriers strategically twice a year to maximize savings..Every Black-Friday, Mint has buy 3-months, get 3-months offer. Use that from Nov-Mar. Then, switch to US-Mobile or other carrier that offers a 2-3 month free offer. Then, switch to Mint again in November. Thus, you pay less than $100 per year for the plan.
Let's say the life of a phone is 5 years. Over that time, with MVNO, you pay over $1100 in total for phone+plan.
With postpaid, let's say you pay $35 per line (with hotspot and taxes) and phone is free. Over 5 years, you will pay $2100 in total.
That's a saving of $1000 per line. With 3 lines, you save $3000 in 5 years…

If you are upgrading 13s to 15s and more than 2 lines you may be better with subsidized family plans.
1. If you cross the data limit then your phone is essentially just a calling and sms device. Even iMessage wouldn't work. So I switched from buying 6GB to unlimited to avoid this issue.
2. They don't throttle generally but data did get deprioritized during thanksgiving. I had five bars in the middle of Times Square with no data connection. This persisted all this weekend whenever I was in Manhattan. No issues once I am across the border in NJ. I was well under 30 GB limit for unlimited plan. I checked
Edit: Today on Sunday, kept on losing connection on i95 with US mobile despite having all 5 bars on 5G. Seems another deprioritization. Don't take me wrong, I will still recommend it for the price. Just want to bust the myth that there is no deprioritization on US Mobile. Also, I have Verizon 5G sim.
Verizon requires you to stay for 3 years and will cover the cost of a phone. If that's what you want, then do that.
We purchase new phones every 3-4 years and hop between carriers. My wife and I spend about $25 per line. My mother-in-law spends about $99yr on her MVNO since she doesn't use data.
I think I would rather do their promotion and get $50 back in a gift card per line up to 2 lines deal.
Essentially the same deal $250 for 12 months but
1) Don't have to prepay a year
2) Get 12 months plus 50 days of service for $250
