Your AVR is from 2018. My Yamaha RX-V361 is from 2007, and up until this week I would have killed for a rx-v683. But I just ordered an X1700H, so you're safe.

I'm sure you've seen this...
https://www.zkelectronics.com/com...a-rx-v683/

The S970H has eARC, HDMI 2.1, 8K, the aforementioned HDR10+, and some other goodies. You'll have to figure out if they're worth it to you. They wouldn't be to me, but then again, I held on to the same AVR for 15 years.

Wait... The link above states that eARC is available on the Yamaha via firmware update if you haven't done that already. Also note that the S970H has the basic room correction software (MultEQ) while your AVR has one level up from basic (YPAO R.S.C). Given those two important things, I'd say it's not worth upgrading. Again, that's me, and I'm cheap.

Seriously, if your looking to get into the market, you might try a used 5.1 optical from shopgoodwill.com. They auction of many non-hdmi 5.1optical receivers for less that $50 shipped. You could even look for a set of bookshelf speakers or even a surround set. Just use an optical cable between TV and receiver. Granted you are not getting lots of the latest audio options, but really, how many speakers are you realistically going to setup in your room. I still prefer to listen with a phantom center and no sub. My Bookshelf speakers output enough bass for me. Everyone has their own listening preferences.

Also, pick up a minimum four input universal remote by GE or Philips, both made by Jasco. You may need to play with codes. I.e Yamaha, one input with one code to power on using up channel button. Second input for powering off using the actual power button.

On average I've paid $29 shipped per receiver and none of the 10 from circa 2001 have been lemons. Chances are they'll outlast a lot of the the modern receivers, what with the way the audio industry has been headed these last decades (soundbars/listening from phone speakers), cost cutting has been the name of the game for the lower priced receivers.

In for one, upgrading from a yahama rx-v683. Will I even notice a difference? I don't listen to anything super loud. This does support hdr10+ which the rx-v683 does not. If this isn't worth the upgrade I'll just return it.

Is this a good deal? Can I use this receiver for both living room and bedroom speakers? We bought a home with ceiling speakers everywhere and my friend said I need a receiver to use them.

It looks like this is pretty comparable to the Onkyo TX-NR6050 according to ZKelectronics, is there any reason to buy this one over the Onkyo (knowing the Onkyo is $299)?

This receiver has 2 zone capabilities so yesit will work on your bedroom speakers too, but the source fron your bedroom wiuld need to run an hdmi cable or buy wireless hdmi adapter

Damn, I needed to hear this. Nothing is going to make my system sound better other than new speakers. I'm never gonna use 8K, is HDR10+ really worth the $250 this will cost me when I sell the old receiver for $150ish? Probably not. Sigh.

Depending on how many speakers you have, this might not be the right thing. This is made to primarily to work with a TV to do home theater surround sound in a living room. It's not made to power a bunch of stereo pairs of speakers in different rooms. If your goal is to play music in multiple different rooms, you would probably be better off with something called a "multi-room amplifier" which is designed to take a music source and send it to lots of different speakers.

I'm bitter I missed the Denon.com refurbished x1700h for $280 this week :/. It was $399 - their 30% off coupon. I delayed and it sold out. I can't bring myself to pay $350 for an x1600h now... so I'm going to keep waiting.
