Yes. Especially newer lights which are mostly LED. If you are running several inflatables, you'll want a heavier cord. 12 or 14g minimum

Yup, basically. Most devices require a certain gauge. The lower the gauge, the more power that runs through the cord.
Unless you have a very specific purpose for the cord, I'd err on the side of caution and get a lower gauge, so that you don't have to own a ton of different cords. A device that requires a 14 gauge cord can use a 12 gauge cord, but it doesn't work the other way around.
