Why leave out the fact that these are incandescent? That fact is in their titles.

Much higher energy cost vs LED. Save a couple bucks up front but the cost to use these eats it up fast.

I'm curious what the energy use numbers are…$1.60 for 100 mini lights vs $10 for 100 philips led. Anyone know ?

This is also only a 50pk, whereas most other common packs are 100 or 150.
Personally I prefer incandescent tree lights because no LED mfr makes the same color scheme (or if they do they ruin it with very obvious PWM), but this isn't any better than the Holiday Living 100pks we routinely use.
The holiday living 100pk multicolor uses about 40W per string and you can chain up to 5 of them per outlet.

As a user of both Tru-Tone LEDs inside and OptiCore LED C9s outside, I'm a prime candidate for mini tree light LEDs but there's nothing good yet.

I don't know what the normal cost savings is for mini lights, but the difference between traditional incandescent C7 painted ceramic bulbs and our Tru-Tone LED C7 painted ceramic bulbs was nearly 10x. A single incandescent string was over 120W (measured on kill-a-watt) and the Tru-Tones were about 13W. Huge difference in cost and especially heat. The old ones actually made burn marks on our kitchen island.

The difference in outdoor C9 incandescent vs LED was similarly huge. Plus outside with the LEDs, you can basically string lights forever because they don't draw very much and still look great at night.

the most annoying thing about incandescent is that there is a limit to how many you can string together before overloading the circuit. Don't really have that problem with LED.

Seriously this. I clicked on this thread thinking they're LED. What a waste of my time and energy.
And your time and energy is so precious that you just had to go waste more of it making this comment.

Thank you for pointing this out, it was overlooked when posting. I've updated the title Smilie

Same here. Warm white LEDs are there already (as long as they're rectified/flicker free), but I'm definitely not a fan of colored leds inside colored caps. It's too intense and they all fight with each other visually. Multicolor incandescent minis are still worth it until someone starts manufacturing a set of affordable LED ones with warm white bulbs encased in colored caps to mimic the glow of the incandescents. There's no reason for that not to be the standard, but here we are.

Tru-Tone may do it one day. They can only do limited product runs now it seems, but we bought a C7 strand (LED inside, painted ceramic bulb just like the old days) and it's indistinguishable from the 40yo one it replaced, except for power usage/heat/etc.
They aren't cheap, but their stuff is top notch and even the box is retro.

I wanted to pick up a few sets of those, but I can't justify it with my current living situation. I'm definitely caving and getting a couple of sets if there aren't cheaper alternatives as a housewarming gift for myself when I make my next move.

I heaf that. We were just replacing a single C7 strand so no huge deal to try Tru-Tone out and it's perfect for our purposes. Buying a few strands definitely would hit the wallet.

It's probably way too much work vs results, but I wonder how it would look if you painted the caps on warm white LEDs.

Is there anyone out there who does this already? Other than Tru-Tone, that is, which I'm guessing is (part of) what they do.
