It has nothing to do with the type of cord, cable, or rope. The reason over/under works is that it alternates the direction of twist so that you can pull the cord straight and the twists will cancel out. The figure 8 method also cancels out the twist.
The way most people coil cords, the cord twists as you pull it straight, and over time the cord ends up with a visible twist. It's just a matter of time.

Nothing new. Been doing to water hose for years. Won't kink when unhooked and thrown to ground.
these 30 foot cables look really nice. the LED light is really nice too.
FYI.
they have had 25 foot ( 3-packs ) for the previous 2-3 years for about $15-20 depending on the time of the month. ( no fancy light )
I got mine for $14.99
