If you're in CA - you're allowed to submit what's called a trial by declaration to fight your ticket. Essentially, you submit your version of events to the judge, who notifies the officer to do the same - and then the judge reviews both declarations from you and the officer and makes a final decision.

This works in getting your ticket dismissed more often if you follow a couple of steps. First, make sure you make your traffic stops is not a memorable one for the officer - keys on dash, sunglasses/hat off, hands on wheel, windows down, "good morning/afternoon/night officer... yes officer, no officer," etc... do not fight him/her on anything and just sign for the ticket and go about your day. 2 weeks before your court date - extend your ticket/push court date out (you can initially push it 3 months). 2 weeks before your new court date, CALL the courthouse and make up an excuse why you can't make it for your court date (surprise work trip, family member sick, etc...) The court clerk will ask you what's the next best date for you - try to push it out another 3 months. Now you're 6 months out from your initial court date - start working on your trial by dec. and make sure the court receives it 2 weeks before your court date. Now this extends the process by about another month, as now the judge will ask the officer to respond and will give him/her 30 days to do so. However, so much time has now passed that the cop won't care about sticking it to you/taking the time out of his/her busy day to write a response - you were not a dick, you were not memorable, and it's whatever. So most likely the judge will dismiss your ticket. If the judge does not dismiss and rules in favor of the officer if they did reply - then you have an option to ask for a trial de novo - an in person trial - and you and the officer both have to go in. Hopefully in that case, so much time has now passed that the officer will most likely not show up, and if he does, then judge will rule in their favor and you can ask for a reduced fine/traffic school to reduce the severity of whatever consequence you may face. Lots of info on this online. I've gotten 8 of mine dismissed and 5 of my friends/family members' tickets here in LA county. Good luck!

A speeding ticket will run you $250-300 in fines and then your insurance will shoot up for 3 years too.

Unfortunately k band is the most prevalentb in my state. X band is no longer in use in my state, but neighboring state where my parents live still use it.

My state actually paves hiding areas along the highway for revenuers to sit. With low power K band leveraging instant on, there's little need for them to leverage newer guns. They're also not permitted to use radar in motion in PA.
Damn, that sucks. I was thinking "why not just disable K band since law enforcement doesn't use it anymore" when reading the complaints about false alerts. Now I know.

I currently have an R3 which has shockingly long range. I used to be an Escort/Beltronics weenie, then I switched to the Radenso Pro Series (the 1st Gen) & then to an XP.
I still have a couple R1s which also have incedible range. No reason to replace until they break...

I have found that turning off k was the best thing I ever done to my radar detector. If cops don't use k in your area then that will quiet down the unit to the point where if it goes off then there is a cop.
I have x and k turned off. My r1 never makes a peep unless john law is close.

Radars are most usefull on regular streets where you are going 40 in a 30 that should really be 40. A couple chirps gives you time to slow it down and not get a ticket, points, and insurance hike...

I can tell I'm getting old because I've changed from being irritated at slow drivers to being irritated at tailgaters. I just came to realize I have no interest in adjusting my speed in order to please another driver, let alone my risk level, or the wear and tear on my car. Leave earlier.
Road rage is a real thing and ppl died for being obnoxious on purpose. Stay on the 1st lane if you go slower than the flow of traffic. Driving in fast lane only because you do speed limit can lead to accidents and conflicts with other drivers

If I'm looking for a 'buy once, cry one' detector, is this it? Never owned one before but have always wanted one. I'm tired of having to go the trial by declaration route here in CA even though I've been successful in getting every single one of my 8 speeding tickets over the last 10 years here dismissed.

How effective is this unit against LIDAR?
This definitely would be top of the line. I would recommend any detector from the R series from uniden. You can go as cheap as below $200 with the R1 and as high as this R8. All of them have great range but you are paying for different options depending on what you want.

None of them would do much against LIDAR. For that you will need laser jammer (looking at $1200 and up and illegal in a number of states) or simply using Waze since laser is always stationary so hopefully someone saw the cop setting up and reported them before you got there.

I'm personally running an R1 with Waze on wireless Android auto. So as soon as I get in the car both turn on and I don't have to remember to do anything. (The radar detector is on a mirror mount and hard wired to a switched power in the back of the mirror)

Should I upgrade my 15 year old V1?
My experience with the v1 was that it is very noisy the uniden units are definitely a lot better with filtering and from the tests I saw online also longer range.

If you want to drive fast, go to the track. No need to endanger other people on public roads. I interned at an automotive safety company and you wouldn't believe what happens to people's bodies at high speed crashes, your organs can implode from your body decelerating and your head smashing into the steering wheel even when wearing seatbelts and the airbags go off. your health is irreplaceable
Driving slower than the flow of traffic is just as dangerous as driving above the flow of traffic. The only difference is that you are hoping that everyone else will be able to avoid you versus you avoiding everyone else. Since if you are above the speed you are filtering through everyone and if you are below the speed everyone is filtering through you.

In any case radar detectors and counter measures are also useful for speed traps. You know when cities abruptly drop the speed limit for no reason and plant a cop a hundred yards from the lower sign. I'm not interested in being a cash cow for the cops.

This may be a stupid question, but just to clarify- when you say you run Waze with this RD, you just have the Waze phone app open while driving with the R8 detector turned on?

The highway radar app is a game changer. Forget Waze, especially if you're running an R8.

I have my phone on a proclip mount right next to my head unit. I have the highway radar app running on my phone and Google maps running wirelessly on Android auto when I need navigation.

Highway radar app not available for iOS though, right?

And anyone with a Tesla running a Uniden RD- what's the cleanest way to install this without having wires visible running from the device to a power source?
