If you're in CA - you're allowed to submit what's called a trial by declaration to fight your ticket. Essentially, you submit your version of events to the judge, who notifies the officer to do the same - and then the judge reviews both declarations from you and the officer and makes a final decision.

This works in getting your ticket dismissed more often if you follow a couple of steps. First, make sure you make your traffic stops is not a memorable one for the officer - keys on dash, sunglasses/hat off, hands on wheel, windows down, "good morning/afternoon/night officer... yes officer, no officer," etc... do not fight him/her on anything and just sign for the ticket and go about your day. 2 weeks before your court date - extend your ticket/push court date out (you can initially push it 3 months). 2 weeks before your new court date, CALL the courthouse and make up an excuse why you can't make it for your court date (surprise work trip, family member sick, etc...) The court clerk will ask you what's the next best date for you - try to push it out another 3 months. Now you're 6 months out from your initial court date - start working on your trial by dec. and make sure the court receives it 2 weeks before your court date. Now this extends the process by about another month, as now the judge will ask the officer to respond and will give him/her 30 days to do so. However, so much time has now passed that the cop won't care about sticking it to you/taking the time out of his/her busy day to write a response - you were not a dick, you were not memorable, and it's whatever. So most likely the judge will dismiss your ticket. If the judge does not dismiss and rules in favor of the officer if they did reply - then you have an option to ask for a trial de novo - an in person trial - and you and the officer both have to go in. Hopefully in that case, so much time has now passed that the officer will most likely not show up, and if he does, then judge will rule in their favor and you can ask for a reduced fine/traffic school to reduce the severity of whatever consequence you may face. Lots of info on this online. I've gotten 8 of mine dismissed and 5 of my friends/family members' tickets here in LA county. Good luck!

A speeding ticket will run you $250-300 in fines and then your insurance will shoot up for 3 years too.

Isn't it true by the type the radar picks up the speed gun it's too late?
No. Radar detectors pick up radar signals which often radiate down the road from where it's broadcasted. Ideally that's what these pick up and that's what the added range is good for.

Laser is instant on line of sight - so if you get tagged you're probably toast. Laser jamers are a thing though

I have 2 radar detectors laying around from the 90s, are police using newer technology?
More than detection, these new units get rid of false positives.
New cars, home security systems, and businesses have lots of sensor and may trigger the detection system of lower end and older models.
Higher end models also give you the ability to only detect certain radar equipment that the police in your state use, further ruling out false positives.

Paid for R7 about $400 three years ago, it has served me well.
Same. Was a sale in January 2019 on Amazon for about $375. It's saved me a dozen times.

Is the Uniden R8 loud enough? I feel like I can't hear my escort passport 360 max..
I keep the volume low. It's noticable when the alert maxes out on signal, but maybe not it I have the stereo up high. I really prefer the visuals and my escort sat in the sun too long or something because it is only visible late at night.

Has anyone received their unit yet ? I ordered on Dec 2 and status is not shipped. I contacted Buy Dig and customer service said the unit is a pre order and it won't ship for 1-2 weeks. But they already sold 500+ on their site. I don't know if this is true or not, or they're just out of stock

This is partially incorrect.
Radar Detectors are legal in Mississippi.
They are illegal in Virginia and the district of Washington DC.

Yes, great purchase.

The R3 is also a MRCD detector.
MRCD, used on photo speed cameras, sensitivity is lacking on all radar detectors. Some radar detectors do not have it.
MRCD detector is useful though to locate all fixed speed cameras, and with the updated firmware (GPS and most current location database) the R3 will give a voice warning when a fixed photo speed camera is coming up.

Mobile MRCD photo speed cameras can be a problem though as they're moved around by the police, often in an unmarked van on the side of a road.

MRCD, (MultaRadar) is used extensively all over Canada, it is newer to the USA. and it is currently in use in Arizona, Virginia, Washington D.C., Texas, New York, and Illinois.

Is this better at detecting laser? got stopped and my r3 didn't alarm about laser signal/gun, luckily only got a warning. I checked some forums and found to my disappointment that r3 and r7 sometimes are not able to catch laser, so just curious is this susceptible to not alerting for laser.. not sure how the cop was doing it like blocking the radar and then making the laser gun hit or they have some advanced laser these days.

Appreciate your input.

Thanks

Honestly my tickets haven't mattered that much with geico, definitely not super speeder tickets though.

I've lost count how many times my radar detector has saved me over the years. It's paid for itself at least 10x at this point.and i have a older one from the 2000's. I have a V1 which doesn't have all the bells and whistles and is noisy as fark, but i don't even hear the junk beeps anymore im so used to it.

That said, there has been so many times i'll be speeding and it will alert me, i slow down or switch lanes and the car behind me or next to me keeps going and gets pulled over. Laser will always be a problem if you don't speed smart or have a jammer to help. Don't speed alone that is a HUGE mistake to be caught...Now with the supplement of waze it helps with that when cops like to hide and use a trigger to catch people with pop shots.
