If you're in CA - you're allowed to submit what's called a trial by declaration to fight your ticket. Essentially, you submit your version of events to the judge, who notifies the officer to do the same - and then the judge reviews both declarations from you and the officer and makes a final decision.

This works in getting your ticket dismissed more often if you follow a couple of steps. First, make sure you make your traffic stops is not a memorable one for the officer - keys on dash, sunglasses/hat off, hands on wheel, windows down, "good morning/afternoon/night officer... yes officer, no officer," etc... do not fight him/her on anything and just sign for the ticket and go about your day. 2 weeks before your court date - extend your ticket/push court date out (you can initially push it 3 months). 2 weeks before your new court date, CALL the courthouse and make up an excuse why you can't make it for your court date (surprise work trip, family member sick, etc...) The court clerk will ask you what's the next best date for you - try to push it out another 3 months. Now you're 6 months out from your initial court date - start working on your trial by dec. and make sure the court receives it 2 weeks before your court date. Now this extends the process by about another month, as now the judge will ask the officer to respond and will give him/her 30 days to do so. However, so much time has now passed that the cop won't care about sticking it to you/taking the time out of his/her busy day to write a response - you were not a dick, you were not memorable, and it's whatever. So most likely the judge will dismiss your ticket. If the judge does not dismiss and rules in favor of the officer if they did reply - then you have an option to ask for a trial de novo - an in person trial - and you and the officer both have to go in. Hopefully in that case, so much time has now passed that the officer will most likely not show up, and if he does, then judge will rule in their favor and you can ask for a reduced fine/traffic school to reduce the severity of whatever consequence you may face. Lots of info on this online. I've gotten 8 of mine dismissed and 5 of my friends/family members' tickets here in LA county. Good luck!

A speeding ticket will run you $250-300 in fines and then your insurance will shoot up for 3 years too.

Been running an R7 (with Vortex Radar suggested settings) for several years now on both vehicles.

Just a few observations:
1) In NJ, highway petrol uses Ka band, never run into a K band
2) All the posted (static) speed signs with radar are K bands, even the mobile ones that they put up on the side of construction zones are mostly K (the exception is when you travel out of state)
3) I have seen non-NJ highway petrol (NH? or Vermont?) use K-band that was my first encounter with true K-band
4) Radar detectors are illegal in edited:VA (you will see posted sign on the freeway when you enter the state) and DC in my local area.
5) The BSM false positive (and other sources of false K like CVS/Target automatic doors) are not really an issue once you adjust the sensitivity using the Vortex Radar suggested settings.

Once you use it for a while you learn to trust your instincts.

I use it in conjunction with Waze, you have to remember "crowd sourced reporting" means someone drove ahead of you on the same road (or on the opposite side) that you are currently on, spotted the highway petrol and was kind enough to REPORT IT on Waze, If it was not reported on Waze then from a Waze POV, it does not exist. I was not so lucky a few years ago when I relied on Waze alone, hence the radar detector.

Finally, my vehicles have adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. I do not drive like Max Verstappen on freeways, it is a sensible tool along with common sense if you would like to drive safely and efficiently.

Having a radar detector prevents accidents. I'd prefer to know when there is a police officer shooting radar ahead, it causes drivers to slam on brakes creating a safety issue.

They have these in a knock off on Alliexpress direct from China. I WOULDNT PAY $300 for this on eBay that's full of knock offs. F no
Nice try. Buydig is an authorized Uniden dealer. I got mine and was able to update using Uniden software…probably wouldn't work with a fake from Alibaba.

I've had an RD in my car since the Cincinnati microwave escort (designed by Mike Valentine). I had a V1 forever until uniden showed up on scene and leapfrogged over the V1. I had an R3 and R7. No complaints but then I discovered the V1G2 + JBV1. Absolutely crushes the R7 when you add in the ridiculous feature set of JBV1 (which for some unknown reason is free, it pulls in data from Waze, ADS-B air traffic and other JBV1 users among a million other things, blacks out the V1 and becomes the remote display, shows heatmaps for how often police are in a specific area etc). The author of JBV1 reached out to uniden to discuss integration but uniden had no interest in opening their API for 3rd parties. It would take a LOT for me to give up the functionality of a V1G2 + JBV1. So I got sucked back in by Valentine. like an above poster, I also drive a C8 and knock on wood, no tix in 15+ years. I once got 3 in 24 hours so that's a big accomplishment for me Smilie.

JBV1 + V1gen2 > anything else
I currently am running a V1G1 + JBV1, with the optional bluetooth and brown-out booster modules. It has the latest hardware/firmware Gen1 ever shipped with. Is it worth it shelling out $490+ to get a V1G2?

Quote from Wayne :
I was an original die-hard V1 arrow fan and had the latest version before the Gen 2 models but I found it to be rendered completely useless by all of the false alarms from the blind-spot monitors no matter what setting I used. I bought an R7 on sale a few years ago and was amazed at the difference and it was money well spent. Not only are the false alarms dramatically reduced, but sometimes the R7 picks up radar so far away that you think it can't be real but it is. I am sure the new generation V1 is good but now I am in the Uniden camp and just upgraded to the R8.
Were you using the latest V1G1 with JBV1, custom profiles/local filters/etc. and still getting tons of false alarms?

A lot of local police still use K band, the Highway patrol/state troopers get the newer guns and the older ones trickle down to the local cops. NJ is also the only state where X band is still used by some local agencies. Radar detectors in are illegal in VA and DC, they are legal in MD.

You are correct, it's VA and DC not MD, just edited my reply.

Never seen a local NJ cop with an X band in NJ, all Ka band around me.

At over $600 with tax, why not just not speed?

Seems this could pay for more than a few speeding tickets anyway.

Doesn't seem worth it to me.
Just one reckless speeding ticket can cost 500+ not to mention the insurance hikes after

what's the purpose of a radar detector? You planning to drive 100mph? LOL That's some expansive detector. I'm sure it'll get you to the rest stop faster than the trucker doing 65. Oh wait, by the time you finish your "doo doo" break, he'll be at the rest stop too.
But I'll be done and on my way while he just pulled in. 🤷 ♂️

Full of them? Highly doubt that. And please don't act like there aren't poor drivers out there that drive the speed limit or under. They cause accidents because of their own negligence as well. It doesn't come down to the speed but the drivers ability. Going above the speed limit isn't reckless. Doing so while tailgating and swerving in and out of lanes to get a few cars ahead in traffic is. Same goes for those "law abiding " drivers who don't understand how to merge or cruise in the PASSING LANE, but don't pass. I've spent enough time commuting daily to know it's not one or the other.

Risking one's life by recklessly speeding is not slick.

At that point, radar detectors are not relevant...
better to just go pl@teless like "wheres981."

There needs to be a program where amazing, safe, superior citizens can record and report low
down reckless criminal speeders and get paid for it - and get more money for higher speeds.
A device that records video, along with speed... and relays info to nearby police.

Eventually speeding won't be possible anywhere, as technology advances and
more advanced automatic speed traps are deployed... so enjoy it while you can!
