S90C with it's far superior QD panel can be had for $2091 on samsung.com with EPP (educators, AAA, work, etc) discount stacked with a certain cashback app. A month or so ago that was $1800, so not the best price right now. Still enough to not want this TV though.

EDIT EDIT EDIT This appears to be gen 2 QD as now a screenshot of the service has been posted. Below is old info.

EDIT EDIT: This TV is a mystery. We only know for sure the original press release said WOLED by LG, then when it hit shelves, "Quantum" was quietly added to the item description. No independent testing has been done yet, but Rtings got one delivered Dec 7. No official word from Samsung on what panel it is (chat reps don't count).

My theory (speculation) is these are previously never released 77" Gen 1 panels. Why?

1) Uses a bit more power per specs than an S90C (Gen 1 was less efficient than Gen 2)
2) Only comes in 77" size (the only size never released during Gen 1 fabrication)
3) Probably low production numbers since it's only sold at Best Buy (Gen 1 had low yield issues which Samsung cited as the reason for no 77" QD TVs at first.)
4) They named it S89C implying it's somehow inferior to the S90C in the same way the S90C is to the S95C.
5) It doesn't makes sense to basically sell a S90C under a new name if it's wasn't somehow different to justify the different model number.

Before i get another comment about "Samsung never made a 77" gen 1" no, they never *released* a 77" gen 1. There's a very important distinction there.

🤦

Again, one more time this is QD-OLED! Not WOLED!

I own this TV, the guy quoting months old articles that are talking about the EU version does not. Again, in EU it was WOLED, in NA it is QD-OLED.

Here is the Canadian spec sheet, which shows it is QD-OLED. https://www.samsung.com/ca/tvs/ol...s89cbfxzc/

Wow, so maybe gen 2? 600+ is suppose to be gen 1 and 512 is suppose to be Gen 2 from my understanding? So 588?

Somewhere in between? Maybe these are underperforming gen 2 panels? Thats extremely likely given this finding.

No wait 512 is 65" It should be 588. Gen 2 confirmed. Buy away lads. Samsung was just drunk.

I purchased this TV on Black Friday at Best Buy and it definitely has Filmmaker mode. It's the mode after Movie in the settings menu. It's also definitely a QD-OLED. I took a macro picture of the panel and it only has RGB sub pixels.
Do you see any difference in picture quality and clarity compared to the S90C? Also, does it have the same amount of HDMI ports?

I recall that in-store, the TV had a sign saying to talk to a rep as there were additional discounts available. I didn't talk to a rep because I was too busy drooling and starting at the Sony A95L. I think it might have been a best buy gift card for $200 but I don't recall.

Like others said, if it wasn't because the S90C went as low as $1800 with 2 years of Samsung Care during BF I think I might have considered this S89C. Knowing Samsung, some kind of similar deal will come again for sure.

That or wait a year to hopefully get a discounted Sony A95L. It is amazing what Sony has done with the same Samsung QD-OLED S90C panel on the A95L. XR Clear is leaps ahead than both LG and Sammy.

Yea but those tv's are nearly double this price. Even with discount on A95L I doubt you'll get anywhere close to $2k, probably more like $3k if you're lucky.

Samsung can't fulfill the S90C 77 I ordered from Samsung.com 2 weeks ago. They are swapping me out to the Costco version. Then they emailed they're not sure when that will ship. Arghhh.

Bought the TV last week. Just went to the store and got the soundbar for free. Online and phone customer service wouldn't do it but in the store it took less than 5 minutes.

Final verdict from rtings about S89C vs S90C.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews...ifferences

tl;dr, It depends on where you live / what country. In the USA it's QD-OLED whereas in Europe, it's WOLED.

Across the board for all S89C however, Filmmaker mode is absent if you care about that.

Anyone who has this TV, go into the service menu and report back the "Ana_peak" or peak ana value / setting.
If you tell me how to access service menu I'll check. I googled and can't find an answer using the provided remote.

Is it the 2nd gen panel same as the S90c? If it is then I'm in. Was pondering before to get the s90c. Walmart deals tempted me on Sony but delivery failures ( damaged tvs) brought me back to considering the s90c. And due yo increased in price in s90c, I think the s89c would be ideal

Previous post someone mentioned that they own one and that it does have Filmmaker mode, maybe it was added later through software update?

It's possible since I remember Samsung pushing out a firmware update around the same time that rtings published their update about the S89C on the site.
