S90C with it's far superior QD panel can be had for $2091 on samsung.com with EPP (educators, AAA, work, etc) discount stacked with a certain cashback app. A month or so ago that was $1800, so not the best price right now. Still enough to not want this TV though.

EDIT EDIT EDIT This appears to be gen 2 QD as now a screenshot of the service has been posted. Below is old info.

EDIT EDIT: This TV is a mystery. We only know for sure the original press release said WOLED by LG, then when it hit shelves, "Quantum" was quietly added to the item description. No independent testing has been done yet, but Rtings got one delivered Dec 7. No official word from Samsung on what panel it is (chat reps don't count).

My theory (speculation) is these are previously never released 77" Gen 1 panels. Why?

1) Uses a bit more power per specs than an S90C (Gen 1 was less efficient than Gen 2)
2) Only comes in 77" size (the only size never released during Gen 1 fabrication)
3) Probably low production numbers since it's only sold at Best Buy (Gen 1 had low yield issues which Samsung cited as the reason for no 77" QD TVs at first.)
4) They named it S89C implying it's somehow inferior to the S90C in the same way the S90C is to the S95C.
5) It doesn't makes sense to basically sell a S90C under a new name if it's wasn't somehow different to justify the different model number.

Before i get another comment about "Samsung never made a 77" gen 1" no, they never *released* a 77" gen 1. There's a very important distinction there.

🤦

Again, one more time this is QD-OLED! Not WOLED!

I own this TV, the guy quoting months old articles that are talking about the EU version does not. Again, in EU it was WOLED, in NA it is QD-OLED.

Here is the Canadian spec sheet, which shows it is QD-OLED. https://www.samsung.com/ca/tvs/ol...s89cbfxzc/

Wow, so maybe gen 2? 600+ is suppose to be gen 1 and 512 is suppose to be Gen 2 from my understanding? So 588?

Somewhere in between? Maybe these are underperforming gen 2 panels? Thats extremely likely given this finding.

No wait 512 is 65" It should be 588. Gen 2 confirmed. Buy away lads. Samsung was just drunk.

Not sure how to respond to you….not sure where you started thinking they were the definitive source. However, I assure you that my post is accurate in what Digital Trends stated.
I never said your post is not accurate. I am saying the video you posted may not be accurate. Silly.

We picked up one yesterday, and it's amazing. Thank you for all of the information in this thread that helped make the decision.

Question though, I went ahead and got the 5 year geek squad protection. I just can't shake the fact that I spent nearly 25% of the cost of the TV on it. I have 30 days to cancel, what are we thinking about the longevity of these? I really doubt burn in will be an issue for us.
Go to rtings.com and searched for the OLED reliability and burn-in articles. They have a video that is really good about.

My take on the info is that new OLED still have burn-in and image retention. That difference is that the image processor have algorithm to reduce burn-in and avoid image retention. However, they can still and will get burn-in, ie if you watch CNN or any other TV content with a constant bright area like the CNN logo or news banner, that area will get burn-in. Sadly, OLEDs with time will lose image quality due to that and also brightness. LED TVs also have burn-in and lose brightness but is not as bad.

If there are people in your household that tend to watch that kind of content, play games and leave the TV paused for prolong amount of times, fall asleep with the TV turned On, or a child that might throw things at it, then it might be worth it getting the extended warranty.

I recommend reading what is really covered by it, reviews of people that submitted a claim, and checking other companies that provide them.

This is one of the reasons I would maybe consider waiting for the S90C to drop in price and getting the warranty from Costco. They usually are very good when it comes to returns. However, I heard Best Buy for 77in TVs send the geek squad to your home instead of having you take it into the store, which if true might be worth considering.

It's funny to me that people are still arguing in here whether or not it's a QD panel when people literally have them in their possession and are confirming it's QD. Weird.

Again, who asserted this was proof? ( you brought the concept of proof up…)
You are being silly. What was your purpose in your post if it is not to convey to people that S89C is not Qd-OLED? If you had stated something like "take it for what it is worth", then that would be different.

The guy after you canceled his order because of your post.

To me, that video adds nothing to the discussion because he didn't say anything worthy of adding to the discussion.

And I never said it was proof. I said it was not proof. Are you Ok this morning?

I really do appreciate your reply, and I say that because what I'm about to say may make you think that I don't. But I literally said I doubt burn in will be a problem for us. I'm asking for things outside of burn in that might be a problem with them. By the way, I do have a toddler and worry about physical damage but it's not covered by the geek squad protection. Again, I appreciate the time you spent on the post but it was about the thing I said I wasn't worried about.

Exactly, and to think someone canceled their order because someone mentioned a youtube video of some guy saying it's not QD-OLED!

"Some" guy, who works for a company that has been around since 2006, that has contacts industrywide, and has over 1.1mm followers. I'll take his word over random SD posters.

Silly is a hyperbole? I would say it is about as much of an understatement as it gets.

The problem I have with this video is that Digital Trends did not provide any sources where they got that information. Did they do any testing? Did they contacted Samsung's engineering team? Or did they just read it from the same European article everone else read?

You do you. I personally read into the actual information rather than just whether something is or not. He offered nothing to back up his statement. they could have arrived at that conclusion in the same way some people here did, from the information out there that the European version is not Qd-OLED.

Again, you do you.

Followers doesn't equal legit information. The state of our political system should show you that. But for what it's worth, it's not just Slickdealers. Rtings has one in their possession for testing and have confirmed it's QD also. At this point, you're just being willfully ignorant.

To be fair, Digital Trends, as a media outlet, is echoing the only official source media outlets ever use when reporting: The official press release from Samsung. The same one all the other news sites used last month when writing their articles about how this TV was stupid for being called an S89C and being a WOLED panel from LG. Because, the only official statement Samsung is every made for the this model number is it's WOLED. What appears to have been discovered, buy us pleb users is Samsung pulled a switharoo and used QDOLED. Samsung has not updated their press release or issued a new one (as far as i know). They have only fixed a few lines in the spec sheet on the Canadian samsung website.

I expect news outlets (who do less investigative reporting in favor of just regurgitating press releases (kinda fair for quick turn FAQ videos like that one)) to be getting this wrong for a while. Rtings is the best group to get this sorted out, as officially as possible without an update from Samsung. And no, they have not published or confirmed QD themselves yet, it was us users commenting as such on their website or them reporting what reddit users are sayin. They just got the TV themselves 2 days ago.

I can see you're posting in that thread, but I mentioned it because Adam Babcock said this.

"It depends on where you live, and I should preface this by saying that we're not 100% sure what the exact differences are, as Samsung is incredibly vague on this. So, first of all, across all units of the S89C wherever you live, it doesn't support Filmmaker mode, so if you care about an accurate image you'll have to adjust some settings yourself. The biggest potential difference, though, is the exact panel used, and here's where things get confusing. It's been widely advertised that the S89C uses a WOLED panel from LG, similar to the LG C3 OLED, but it seems like that's only true in Europe. In North America, the S89C uses a QD-OLED panel, so it offers nearly identical picture quality to the S90C."
