People think nothing of ballpoint, rollerball, and felt tip pens, to say nothing of Sharpies, dry erase markers, and non-permanent markers, plus paper, post it notes and (dare I say it) wrapping paper.

So now we're going to get upset about decent writing instruments that are priced so people can try out an interesting pen or a different ink using about the amount of plastic found in the packaging discarded with a breakfast yogurt or soda bottle.

I got these because last time I saw a deal on SD for a fountain pen it was the cross and that didn't come with ink, I couldn't find ink cartridges for it anywhere for a long time, then when I did, I didn't like the fine point of the pen since it's scratchy to write with it and doesn't produce the calligraphy like writing I wanted from a fountain pen. These disposables are supposedly 'medium' nib, but are also not smooth to write with and also a pretty fine point imho. Where can I find a fountain pen that has a nice fat point for producing more of a calligraphy type result?
The "feel" is significantly determined by the type of ink and the nib. For calligraphy-type results, look for one with a more flexible nib. These pens claim to offer that, but it sounds like you tried them and didn't like them.

Thanks, I googled it and it appears there's 2 types of nibs - round, and italic. These are (as almost all fountain pens are) round, which what I read says they produce a uniform line regardless of the direction of writing, italic produce the calligraphy style which is wider on the horizontal stroke.

Add to that the flexibility of the nib. With a flexible nib, pressing harder opens the gap at the tip, producing a wider line with more ink. Less pressure yields a finer line with less ink flowing.

If you are talking about asian calligraphy . Pentel pocket brush pens are relatively inexpensive..

Just received mine. They write very well and don't smudge at all. Thumbs up for sure. I don't think I paid this much though.

If you're serious about calligraphy, I would consider getting a Pilot Parallel set, they usually come with a cartridge or two and Pilot cartridges are easy to track down.

If you want a regular fountain pen with a smoother nib, Pilot Metropolitan (medium/broad nib) is also great, and again cartridge are easy to find (and refill with bottled ink). Personally I find my Metropolitan medium nib to be as wide as I would use for writing in a college ruled notebook.

The Europeans tend to have broader nibs in general (i.e. Japanese Medium is European Fine), so a Lamy Safari or a Kaweco sport in a broad nib would be pretty fat and is usually pretty smooth (their quality control isn't great).

So the question of why a disposable fountain pen? It allows the experience of a fountain pen without all of the hassle. I love the experience of writing with a fountain pen, but don't write enough to use them optimally. It's really frustrating that every time I pickup my pen, it's dried out, or there's ink on the section, or there's ink all over my backpack because I had the audacity to take it on an airplane. I don't know about these Zebra pens, but at least the Pilot varsity and Platinum Preppy do a better job of being functional pens that are ready to use when you need it than a lot of refillable fountain pens.

In terms of waste, single-use plastics suck for sure. However, a lot of the folks whining about disposable fountain pens (and disposable pens in general) have a drawer full of 56 fountain pens and a wall of bottled ink that they will never finish. On the other hand, assuming these don't dry out, six disposable fountain pens is at least a years supply of pens for most people. Which is more wasteful?

I also view these as gateways to fountain pen usage. You may not be willing to commit to buying a fountain pen, bottled ink, cartridges, etc. but you've always been curious about fountain pens. I think a lot of people probably started with a Pilot varsity and got sucked into the fountain pen hobby. Obviously if you exclusively use disposable fountain pens and buy this set every year, it's pretty wasteful, but a one time purchase hardly registers on the scale of human waste.

I would recommend spending a little more and buying a reusable fountain pen from companies like Kaweco or LAMY. They're reliable and affordable, and will completely ruin your experience using any other pen.
There are lots of fantastic sub $20 reusable pens out there that are extremely reliable. I've personally standardized on wing sung 3008's. they're piston filling demonstrators, require no converters, hold way more ink than cartridge converter pens, look fantastic, and have very reliable fine spring steel nibs. they make fantastic desk pens for people who are afraid of pens walking at work as they are only $15 for a 4 pack (empty, you fill them with your own bottled ink).

I do have some nicer pens, a twsbi eco, a lami safari, a moonman t2, but I keep gravitating toward some of the excellent super-inexpensive options that perform pretty much just as well... in fact, I just bought a Picasso 916 Malage with an ultrafine accounting nib and really like it for small writing and it flows exactly as much as it needs to in order to provide an excellent writing feel but not enough that it bleeds through cheap paper (which is a really tough balance).

Are there pens that are much better? absolutely (especially once you start getting into the gold nib territory), but can a cheap fountain pen be reliable and provide an excellent writing experience? - sure!
