Not trying to be smart but you'll know when you need one. If you have to ask then most likely you don't. I, and many others, have asked the same.

These are dedicated riding computers. You can link speed, cadence, heart rate, power, radar sensors and even a Garmin headlight to read/be controlled by this. It has a long battery life for century/multi century rides. Fastens securely to handlebars. Is compact. A phone battery will drain with GPS on longer rides. Also won't connect to all those sensors. A watch can track and connect with some, but will definitely die on longer rides. These are the main advantages of a cycling computer. This is a great deal on it.

Cool.
Noone stops you.

Let me know about battery life with it under the sun (high backlit @ screen for you to see anything) while running all its antennas (GPS + data) to have OK accuracy within a dense grid, or accuracy when running only on GPS outside of grid, or how much your fancy new iPhone's, Galaxy's etc camera(s) will not get their AF and image stabilization mechanical assemblies shaken out of whack (permanently) within a reasonably short time spent mounted rigidly on your handebars.

Phones have their own limitations, and for serious cyclists its is a matter of time before one or more of the above will make them look for something better.

For casually recording your rides on Strava or your fitness tracker of choice, a phone will work, sure. I'd recommend keeping it in a pocket or somewhere with some vibration absorption tho, not on the handlebar. Trust me.
Pixel 5 with Quadlock, MTB, ~1000Mi )since the QL), so far everything is still working fine!
Either I'm lucky, or the suspension and the QuadLock geometry helps.

Have had this since it was released and it has been rock solid. Battery life is still great. Only qualm has been navigating screens when it's raining, the touch screen makes it difficult. No biggie if you don't ride in the rain, don't change screens often, or if you have di2 and can map buttons to scroll. Climb pro and the maps navigation make this worth it over the 530 for me. This seems like a solid price

Thumbs up for bike deals! Even though it cracks me up when folks who don't spend a lot of $ on bikes pontificate on why this is useless.

Great deal. I'd much rather wreck my mtb on a Garmin rather than my cell phone. Also infinitely better battery life, easier to pair to lots of ANT+ devices, and work with bike gloves on.

This is a great gift for any rider who doesn't already have one. Many people ride only with a phone or watch and think it's enough. Not having to drain the battery on the phone is enough, but there are other features that make it great. If you ride more than a few days per week, the Garmin really helps with fitness and other stuff that running Strava alone won't give you.
These hookup with power meters, heart rate monitors, etc. All to provide information on consumption and output. Strava can estimate some of that data, but this actually measures and records it.
I relied on my phone or watch for years until I received the 830 as a gift. I didn't know what I was missing.

Looks like the auction is showing the 840? Extra buttons on the side:

Bought a forerunner 945 from buydig eBay last week. Price dropped $40 the next day, messaged in for a refund. First they said no, but we can refund $10. I said that doesn't sound fair, listing says free refunds so would they prefer I repurchase and just send the first watch back? They came back and offered $20 off. I said no thanks, I'll just send the first watch back and reorder. Then they "had to check for management approval" for the full amount. Another day goes by and they agree. Meanwhile this whole time they've uploaded a fake tracking number that hasn't been picked up/shown any movement for 8 days. Requested a full refund and now they're ghosting me.

Buyer beware.

The manufacturer's part number (010-02061-00) indicates it's an 830 per Garmin's documentation. [garmin.com] Other auction pics match the 830 ones on that site (Ridgeview Road, Threshold Plan, Altitude Acclimation, Need Help?), so I'm guessing the seller just messed up the first four.

I bought the Karoo 2 from an earlier SD this year and I love it! If you research both options you'll find the Karoo 2 is a better device in most categories except for advanced training metrics and battery life. Also, Karoo gets an insane amount of updates.

Why would anyone need this? Pretty much anyone I know who cycles has a smart watch or a phone with Strava. Seems redundant.
