Noone stops you.
Let me know about battery life with it under the sun (high backlit @ screen for you to see anything) while running all its antennas (GPS + data) to have OK accuracy within a dense grid, or accuracy when running only on GPS outside of grid, or how much your fancy new iPhone's, Galaxy's etc camera(s) will not get their AF and image stabilization mechanical assemblies shaken out of whack (permanently) within a reasonably short time spent mounted rigidly on your handebars.
Phones have their own limitations, and for serious cyclists its is a matter of time before one or more of the above will make them look for something better.
For casually recording your rides on Strava or your fitness tracker of choice, a phone will work, sure. I'd recommend keeping it in a pocket or somewhere with some vibration absorption tho, not on the handlebar. Trust me.
Either I'm lucky, or the suspension and the QuadLock geometry helps.
Great deal. I'd much rather wreck my mtb on a Garmin rather than my cell phone. Also infinitely better battery life, easier to pair to lots of ANT+ devices, and work with bike gloves on.
These hookup with power meters, heart rate monitors, etc. All to provide information on consumption and output. Strava can estimate some of that data, but this actually measures and records it.
I relied on my phone or watch for years until I received the 830 as a gift. I didn't know what I was missing.
