Don't recommend this bank for serious users unless your goal is just to earn the signing bonus. I had SoFi for roughly 6 months, used them for direct deposit and bill pays as I normally did with other banks. One day I got an email saying my account was locked and needed to call their 800 number. I called multiple times and their CSRs were not only clueless but also rude by hanging up on customers if they didn't have answers. When asking to speak with their manager, their standard answer was "this is the highest escalation point". They could not tell you any reason why the account was locked, nor a timeline when the so-called internal review would be completed. During that review period, all scheduled payments will be declined and they are not responsible for any consequences. I filed complaints with CFPB, OCC and BBB, and got the restriction removed in a week or so. SoFi finally sent me a letter stating that "Regrettably, it was found that our system flagged your account in error, which caused the restriction. We offer our deepest apologies for the error and delay". As soon as the lock was removed, I closed my accounts and advised my family members and friends to do the same, because you never know when SoFi would decide to lock down your access to your own money without reasons and timelines.
any tricks for the direct deposit? will a bank transfer qualify?
NM, I read the fine print.
Bonus Terms: In order to qualify for eligibility for a bonus, SoFi must receive at least one Direct Deposit (as defined below) from an Eligible Participant, the first of which must be received on or after 12/7/2023. Direct Deposits are defined as deposits of $1,000.00 or greater from an enrolled member's employer, payroll, benefits provider, or government agency via ACH deposit. Deposits that are not from an employer, payroll, benefits provider, or government agency (such as check deposits; P2P transfers such as from PayPal or Venmo, etc.; merchant transactions such as from PayPal, Stripe, Square, etc.; and external bank ACH transfers not from employers) do not qualify for this Direct Deposit Promotion. The amount of the bonus, if any, will be calculated during the Direct Deposit Bonus Period as described and defined below.
SoFi is great but they still have some common FinTech limitations that are annoying.
- You can only link other bank accounts using Plaid. If you don't agree to Plaid terms you are pretty much out of luck.
- Email notifications are very limited, they try to only use push notifications which are not nearly as good for keeping history and you have to keep the app on your phone.
- They do have a website at least, but it's very basic and similar to the app.
On the good side though
- The debit card is great, no foreign transaction fees, and many free ATMs
- You can keep all money in savings account and auto-draft to maximize interest
- Vaults are good for securing and saving money

No issues with the accounts at first. Then I did one of their mortgage questionnaire promos. Very shortly after I received a marketing call from someone who stated they were calling in response to that specific survey. I simply hung up. Five minutes later I get a spam text telling me I was approved for a loan. Then 1o minutes later I get another. They have been coming a few per day with similar themes for the past couple weeks. I don't know if Sofi shared my info with a bunch of spammers or the Sofi solicitor added me to spam lists out of retribution for me simply hanging up when he called.
That alone was enough that I was considering closing the accounts. Then a couple days ago I started getting the one-time passcode messages from them even though I didn't request them. It's not the first time someone has tried to get into one of my accounts, but it is the first time anyone ever tried to get into one of my bank accounts. The day after mine started, my wife started getting them also. That solidified that it was a Sofi problem as the email address she is using is one I created for her (on my server) specifically for Sofi. No one else has that email address..
We are done with these sketchy a** people.
The operative words here being "on my server". Hosting your email is probably what got you getting all these spams.
has anyone lost their $300 cash bonus? I was rewarded that $300 a few weeks ago but now when I rechecked, it is nowhere to be found on my statements/transactions.
The operative words here being "on my server". Hosting your email is probably what got you getting all these spams.
The spam came to my mobile number, not an email address. The fact that they started pouring in 5 minutes after I hung up on the Sofi sales rep was the first indicator. Another is that they were all very targeted spam messages (related to home loans, personal loans, secured credit cards, etc).
The email I referenced was getting one-time pass code requests. Again, that happens with all the dark web leaks and such. However, this email address was created, specifically, for use with Sofi and has only existed a couple months, It being hosted on my server is really neither here nor there. The only place it could come from is Sofi or from someone infiltrating my server, but aside from the fact that my server is of interest to no one, why in the world would they pick that specific email address out of the 200 or so on there? That would also be some massive coincidental timing that right after a disgruntled Sofi employee signs me up for spam that someone tries to get into my account and my wife's - one of which is using a Sofi-specific email address.
Did they ask you security/credit verification question - usually involves something like they ask you old street address, bank names, or maybe monthly mortgage amount ? If you get them wrong - then they might suspect a fraud & they'll probably shut down the application.
I was denied with my state ID and then used my passport and it worked. must wait 24 hours after denial to apply again.

Been with them for almost 2 years, and never experienced this. I've been very happy with their services.
Never had a problem with them. I got the max direct deposit bonus since i timed it with my bonus. Also applied for the home loan through the website. Yes some underwriter or loan officer will call you, sometimes repeatedly until you answer, but after i spoke with them i didn't get anymore phone calls regarding the home loan. Eventually i decided to go through with a hard pull, got approved, and dont have any issues. Sometimes my loan officer will reach out through text to ask if they can do anything but thats it.
My saving rate dropped to 1.5% - I may have missed reading how to maintain highest interest possible. Can someone explain? I don't plan to direct deposit fund into this bank account so maybe that's the reason. I only open becasue of their soft pull on credit check. Didn't even care for their sign on bonus because it dine and dozen. However, is there another bank that does soft pull that doesn't screw around with interest rate just because you can't meet minimum standards required to maintain account activities from setting up direct debit?
