Kinda Yes depending on applications (better sensor, better AF, better video, new menu). But A7 III is more than enough for most people.

Haven't shopped camera gear in a while - currently have an a6400 and a6500 and thinking I should read up a bit on the new a6700 since people keep mentioning how awesome the AF is on it. Thoughts on the upgrade?

A6700 or A7CII? with 3rd part lenses.
OR
A7cii with 3rd party lenses or Nikon Z6II with Nikon lenses and save about $250 vs Sony option.

Going to use it for portraits, kids playing, low light backyard parties. Want to invest once and keep it for long atleast 8-10years.

If you just read those existing posts in Sony camera forums, most people said full frame camera especially something like A7cii/A7IV has better video/photo quality and better in low light than APS-C camera.

In term of video recording/photo quality, may want to search for youtube review/comparison to see some good examples.

For younger kids probably don't need telephoto lens that can handle low light. But as kids grow, may be they will join sport (indoor like basketball/volleyball court and/or outdoor at football/soccer field, track and field), indoor music band/concert, indoor/outdoor graduation. May need to think about what kind of lens/camera body to get if want to keep it 10+ years. Like indoor basketball may need low light and can zoom in/out for different distance shot. Outdoor marching band may need wide angle lens (like 20mm) to cover the whole football field from top of the high school football field stand, etc which also good for blogging, landscape photography, architecture, and real estate, etc.
