Ok ok, I'm in for one. I can finally stop looking at receivers. I wish everybody luck on the rest of their journey.

Thanks OP!! Coupon still works. I just called my dealer where I get my equipment from ... the best he could do is $1,275.... I didn't tell him about this deal..

I jumped on this.. FYI this is not made in Japan like the 4800 - but it has a 2 yr warranty.

The X series all have 3 year warranties I believe.

Folks who have compared 3800 and 4800, did you notice any difference in the soundstage/image? Does 4800 feel any richer or fuller than 3800? I understand it may not be louder with additional 20 watts of power. How is normal volume listening? I've a dedicated home theater with 5.1.2 setup. Plan to make it 7.2.2 soon, so want to make sure I get the right one. Thanks!

No. Sound identical. Buy whichever has the features you need. Both are best in class.

I have the Denon s760h from Costco that I got a year back for $399. Would I be able to hear the difference for KEF R3 setup?

Yes, due to the audyssey xt32 room EQ. Not for any other reason though.

I did compare them.
That question has A LOT of variables that play into that question.

In basic terms unless your speakers like power/ harder to drive and or listen at higher than normal levels you probably ok with the 3800.

If you have or plan to use any external amps there is no real difference.

Imo the extra $400 would be better spent getting Dirac Live & Dirac Live Bass Control than 4800.

Thanks! I've Elac Debut 2.0 series (6 ohm) speakers (LCR and surrounds). I don't intend to add additional amplifiers.

Thanks ! Except additional 20 watts, monolithic design and jitter reduction, I couldn't find anything that is different. I don't use more than one zone.

Get the 3800. I did. To replace my 3600 that just went out of warranty. By the time I sell the mint 3600, the 3800 will have cost me like $500 👌🏼

Seems like the dacs in this receiver are subpar, preouts or not you are stuck with the inferior performance especially after buying a dirac license. From the audiosciencereview: "Conclusions
I had high hopes going into this review thinking the company had seen the advantage its superior objective measurements in the past and would try to capitalize on them. Sadly, the reverse seems to be true with the DAC section taking a large step backward. Considering that the 3800 costs $500 more than 3700H, this is very surprising to me. Yes, inflation has a lot to do with that but surely the eye needed to be focused on making sure they at least met the same level of performance as last generation.

The good news is that the amplifier seems to be same design as last generation and has only taken a small hit.

Denon had been my "goto" recommendation for AVRs and even AVPs. When anyone asked me about either, I would just say "get a Denon AVR." While subjectively the performance of this new generation may be similar, I can't accept the regression in objective measured performance.

It is with much sadness that I cannot recommend the Denon AVR-X3800H. "

I want to expand to 4 speaker Atmos (from 7.2). I have only ever used my "receivers" to process audio and drive my speakers. I let my media player send video to the projector and audio to the receiver. I have never even used my receiver as a pass through…which means all the video processing capabilities are a total waste (for me).

Are multi-channel "audio-only" processor/amps still made? I presume they are, but can any of them run Dirac (or similar)?

Does not matter. Also, Denon is using the same DAC in all units manufactured now whether that be X3800H, X4800H, or previous X3700H.

If expanding to 7.1.4 then you would need the receiver to process 12 channels. It would require a receiver like this plus an external amplifier for at least 2 channels. You can send the audio to the receiver if you don't need to video to passthrough it, but with a receiver like this it would make more sense to cable everything from your media player through the receiver and then to the projector.
